Do you sniff your LO's bottom to check if they pooped? I totally do! It's just so much easier

Sometimes. I'm more of a poker though. I'll poke the front of the diaper and if it feels hard or thick, I'll change her.

Yup! I poke too but we also use the pampers swaddlers so the green line helps as well.

It's the combination poke-and-sniff test, as well as what @googly-eyes said, using the Swaddlers indicator line.
And, of course, that vague room "freshening" smell of poop.
