We have a family friend do them, who is in the business. He charges us next to nothing and he is very good at what he does. We would have no idea how to do our taxes on our own. Do you do your own taxes? Does someone else do them for you?

My mom did them until I got married. We paid for someone to do it last year.

We do our own, so hopefully we aren't even audited - I'm sure we are horrible at it.

we do the same thing as you! trusted family friend who is a CPA!!! Don't know what we would do without him!

We've done both, but I think this year DH is going to go back to our accountant.

My mom is an accountant and always did my taxes for me until DH and I got married. His dad has always done his taxes, so now he does ours too! I seriously dread the day that neither of them can do it for us! I took Accounting in University 3 times! My eyes would just glaze over as I looked at all the columns!

We always do TurboTax but want to have an accountant do it this year. How much does it typically cost?
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
We do them. For a while I even did them for DHs personal business which was a bit complicated but now that he closed it down it should be pretty easy. I may take it somewhere to be checked for free but usually we get a return.

We pay someone now because we have multiple mortgages, investment property and some non standard income and other stuff so I don't feel comfortable doing them on my own.
Places that charge an arm and a leg to do taxes for people that don't own property and simply have your standard, straight forward w-9 income really burn me. Taxes are actually really easy to do if you can use a short form and pop-up tax shops shouldn't take advantage of that.

I make my mom help me. haha.
My husband and I do our taxes separately though because he owns his own company and is a soul proprietor, his taxes are pretty messy from years of neglect, so I try to keep mine separate!

We use Turbo Tax. I think it's absurd to pay somebody $250 to do our taxes (what both H&R Block and a CPA have charged us in the past). We basically have no write-offs so it's not complicated. The most complicated part of this year's taxes will be that we bought a house last year, but I don't think we paid nearly enough in interest or property taxes to itemize, so I don't think that will be an issue anyway.

@plantains: I have no idea how much it costs to have it done by someone, since we use our family friend, he only charges us $60, and we have complicated taxes.

We have an accountant who handles ours. Once we started a business we had to and it does take a ton of stress off of us.

I do my own. It's not that complicated and I like knowing how the taxes are calculated. I have heard that doing your taxes in the US is more complicated than here in Canada, though.

We do TurboTax. We used to have someone do our taxes for us but he retired. Our taxes are pretty simple.

Ours are pretty confusing due to investments and DH's job, so we pay someone to do them.

We always did our own, but now they are officially too complicated. Own business, contractor, rental property, two other properties. We need help.

I work in accounting but never done my taxes. My Dad did them before I got married and now DH does them. Always use Turbo Tax.

We used a professional when hubs played in the NFL. They only get paid during the seventeen weeks of the season. And when they have an away game that weeks paycheck is considered to have been earned in the state where the game was played. So he would have to file in like six states. Plus he had a million write offs. Now we have pretty standard taxes. Investment income is about as exciting as it gets and I can handle all of it in turbo tax.

We do it ourselves. They're very simple and we use TurboTax. I'd like to hire someone in the future when we have kids, property, investments, etc.

I do ours with TurboTax. We don't have anything complicated, though.

A guy who use to do it for a living now does it out of his home and doesn't charge much. He is very, very old so every time tax season comes around, we get a little nervous that he isn't around anymore.

I use a program. Whatever I can get on sale. I think Amazon has one on sale for $20 about 2 months before taxes are due.
Though this year I sold some stock and might want to hire someone to do it.

We do ours with TurboTax as well. We did them last year and this year they should be easier.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
We have someone else do them.
When I was working as a case manager I had to help a client do his taxes. I had no idea what I was doing. It was bad.... but it all turned out ok. Still, I never ever want to do that again.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
We do our own and they're very easy with the automated software that is out there. We don't have any special circumstances, though, that would make it worthwhile to hire someone.
coconut / 8279 posts
I used to do my own on TurboTax. Since we've been married I've been using DH's accountant. DH has way too many 1099's for me to do them.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
We do our own through TaxAct on-line. So far, it seems pretty straight-forward, but I'm curious to see how complicated it is to do them this year since we have made some investments. And then next year we'll have a baby to take into account. But TaxAct seems pretty simple - they walk you through everything with very basic questions, so I think we'll still be able to do our own.

@MamaMoose: that is insane! How complicated! (also, I love football and want to know so much more, but I won't pry!)
