Just wondering if you drink at work sponsored events.
Just wondering if you drink at work sponsored events.

Yep, I do. I work in a small office (8 people) and we will get drinks after work on occasion (with the boss).
There is alcohol at work-sponsored events (summer and winter parties) and most people drink. I've seen some co-workers get tipsy, but everyone is always responsible.
A few co-workers got drunk at my wedding a few years ago, but no one did anything regrettable.

If I'm not pregnant/BFing, yes. I work in a very alcohol-friendly industry. It'd probably be weird if I didn't drink

Yes, two or three drinks max though. I don't want to be sloppy at work events.
persimmon / 1379 posts
I made it a rule not to, only because I am known to go from totally sober to way too tipsy after one drink.

Sure - I don't get drunk or anything, but almost everyone drinks at my work events.

Yes, I do. I work for a non-profit, so when we have events (like a golf tournament, Halloween ball, etc.) I'll have a few drinks.

Yes. My company even has a corporate policy on drinking at work-related events: they "officially" suggest pacing yourself and sticking to wine/beer instead of mixed drinks. Totally made me lol when I read it the first time!

Yes. Depending on what my role is at the event I will wait until after I've done work (such as helping with check-ins, working on the scheduled program, speeches). If it's just a schmooze-type event I will have a drink. We have an event next Sunday night and I plan to have a couple of glasses of wine and dance my booty off!

Never. Mostly because I get the "Asian glow" and I just feel like that makes me look drunk/unprofessional (even if I feel fine).

Yep! If I didn't people would start thinking I'm KO'd. I was on a work training trip last year with my big boss and we were tossing drinks back every night. I think it's helped strengthen work relationships, to get to know colleagues/bosses in a less formal, relaxed atmosphere.

Yes I do. I just try to make sure to never be more drunk than my boss
grapefruit / 4235 posts
YES, but i work at a lobbying firm so we have lots of fundraisers and parties.
There was this one epic time when we all went to a vodka bar in new york...and all vowed to never get that drunk together again.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Yes. If the company's buying, I'm going a couple cocktails on their dime
pomegranate / 3716 posts
Yep, I'm in the event planning industry, and all of our events have alcohol! I will only have 1 or 2 since I turn red.

Only at coworkers weddings, I'm never at a work sponsored event where alcohol is served. Our Christmas party is a family party, so no drinks served. (I heard it used to be an adult party before my day...they ended it after an affair came out...that's the rumor anyways)
pineapple / 12053 posts
when i'm shooting a wedding, no. (i have the b&g offer a lot!) but if it's an industry party, then yes!

@swurlygurl: me too.
I work in the trucking industry - it's a very "manly" field, and alcohol is generally encouraged at work events held afterhours.
And ya know. KC is a pretty drink friendly town.
nectarine / 2272 posts
Yep! We do work sponsored happy hours and stuff and then i'm also friends with co-workers that i go out with often.

Not since I've been pregnant, but otherwise yes. For better or worse, drinking is a big part of the office culture. Fridges are stocked with beer Wed-Fri and there is a bar IN the office. There are also many work sponsored open bar events throughout the year.
It was a big shift coming from my last company where there was no drinking ever, except a half a glass of champagne on one occasion to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary.

@meridian, pepcid AC helps with that I take it before drinking lest i want to look like a tomato
pomegranate / 3716 posts
@blackbird: I try to remember to pop a Pepcid before I go to an event, but I often forget, haha!

If there is alcohol available, I would drink. Wouldn't bring a flask from home or anything, though.

yes but only a few drinks. however several people at my firm ALWAYS drink too much and embarrass themselves. firm events are always entertaining.
grapefruit / 4085 posts
Yes - I used to do PR for big charity galas so when we got there, my boss always went straight to the bar to get us drinks
grapefruit / 4089 posts
I have in the past. I'm nannying now, so drinking on the job is definitely discouraged
pomegranate / 3231 posts
My co-workers are pretty big on drinking. So, yes (when not pregnant).

I'm self employed now, but used to work for a company that would buy a few cases of wine/champagne per year for us to keep at the office and consume during birthday and other celebrations.
