We'll have a beer or two (or a glass of wine) but it's usually over the course of a few hours and a meal as well. If one of us did not feel up to driving we would 100% say so and the other person would drive home. If something happened where we both weren't comfortable driving home (unlikely but never say never!) we would call keys please or a cab or something.

I think having a drink with dinner is perfectly fine. I am a regular drinker, meaning that most nights I will have a glass of wine or a beer with dinner, so I know how that amount of alcohol effects me. I don't think drinking to excess around your kids, whether in or out of the home is ok, but I don't have a problem with responsible drinking.

We would both have a drink when we went out to dinner with LO but we lived within walking distance of all the restaurants downtown, I'd be comfortable having a drink with dinner though if I did have to drive.

@kiddosc: I agree. I think it's MORE responsible to show your kids what responsible drinking looks like than to forbid it in hopes that they'll just know. I feel like seeing it around all the time when I was a kid and seeing how my parents could have one beer or one glass of wine really helped me as a young adult to know my limit.

If we have LO with us we always decide before arriving who is driving, that person does not drink (or only has 1 if we are there a span of a few hours.) I never drink if she's in the car with me, not worth it to me. I grew up with my parents drinking around us and I don't think it affected me negatively.

If we're out to eat or over at a friends' house, we might each have a drink. I think having a drink in front of your children is a completely different issue from drunk driving, though. Neither my husband nor I have ever driven drunk, and we never would.

aaaaabsolutely. But like many others, I will only have one drink because I'm still pumping breastmilk. And we're usually out and about long enough where driving will happen several hours after the last drink. We're not really in the drinking to get buzzed or drunk phase of our lives anymore.

DH and I have experienced parents on both end of the drinking spectrum, and we hope to set a responsible example with our own drinking. If we are both out with our kids, yes, we will have one drink, but only if DH is driving, because my tolerance after one is way different than his.

I *never* saw my parents drink, whereas DH's parents are alcoholics. I think we will find a happy medium that shows alcohol is fine and enjoyable, as long as you are responsible with it!

I think that it is really important to model healthy alcohol consumption for children, so we drink in public the same as we do at home. For me, that means almost never with the very occasional cocktail that I don't finish. For my husband, that means one glass of beer or wine with dinner, maybe two if it's a weekend and we're out with friends and I'm not having any. I never drink to the point of feeling it. If I did, we'd make sure that one of us was totally sober at all times.

My mother was raised by drunks and had really understandable fear and hate for alcohol all my childhood. I grew up thinking it was really scary and bad and awful and with just a really unhealthy attitude about it. I still don't care for it personally, but I really support my husband in making it a healthy part of his life and modeling that for our children.

Just a drink or two casually, nothing overdoing it.

I would have no problem having a few drinks, but I never want my children to see us drunk.

I'm married to a Frenchman, so wine at dinner, whether it be at home our out, is a norm for us. DS, who is 2, often gets curious but we always tell him wine is not for children.

As others have said, I think it is very important to be a model of responsible drinking. In any case, DH and I rarely have more than 2 drinks at a time. We don't drink to get drunk, we drink to enjoy.

@Andrea: We used to bug our parents for sips when were younger, too. Our parents let us have a tiny sip to try it. Luckily, at the time, we both thought it was gross and never asked again! I did however make the occasional "kid's beer" when I was little (I would mix coke and sprite and the coloring would be similar).
