We're driving to a friend's house shortly... there's supposed to be 2-4 inches of snow today. Hope it doesn't get too bad before we head back this evening! So far, there's no accumulation on the roads that I can see though.

Do you drive in the snow?

We have probably 9-10 inches of accumulated snow and another 3-6 expected today. I'm not a huge fan of driving in the snow but we have DHs Christmas party tonight that's 45 minutes away in good weather, so we will be driving.

I wouldn't be able to go anywhere if I didn't! I have studded snow tires which make a huge difference, though.

I prefer not to, but being from Upstate New York D has no problem with it at all. This past February we took a long weekend with his family in New Hampshire when a blizzard hit, and 2-8 hour legs of the trip were in blizzard conditions, one of them through the Green Mountains. Thankfully, E slept most of the time, but I was barely breathing, which is why I wasn't driving. We went slowly, and slid into a snow bank once, but other than that had no problems. I think D rather enjoys it, actually.

I don't. I wrecked once because of slick roads so I'm gun shy. Luckily I'm off work in the winter.
I had to drive home in the snow with the roads being slick a couple of years ago and I almost had a panic attack.

It's always snowy or icy here from about November to May so we drive a lot in the snow and ice. We have all wheel drive, keep our tires on the newer side, leave lots of space between vehicles, and travel the speed the conditions allow. The scariest part is being on the road with other drivers who are inexperienced or reckless, and/or with vehicles that aren't properly equipped (like pick-ups without ballast, or cars without winter tires) since they're likely to rear end or slide into you!

I live in New England so if I didn't, I would be in trouble! I have 4WD, my husband has AWD and we put snow tires on the cars in the winter.
I actually don't mind driving in snow, it isn't that bad if you're used to it. Easier driving in snow than heavy fog or icy conditions!

Oh yes! Hospitals don't close for bad weather, so rain/shine/snow I am driving in it!
pomelo / 5621 posts
If I didn't then I'd have to stay home for half the year.
I try and stay in if the roads are really bad. But like @mskeee: said, it is the unsafe drivers that make it scary.
grapefruit / 4823 posts
I don't like to, but it's hard not to in Upstate New York...you have no choice most of the time during winter.
pomelo / 5678 posts
If I didn't I couldn't get very far. I had a sports car in the mountains and it made me a very safe driver. I had to be! The best advice is to just slow down. The ice can be a real stickler...

I live in a warm climate, but wouldn't have a problem driving in the snow.

No, I don't drive in the snow. I take public transportatiion on those days.

Driving in the show right now. Well DH is driving... I'm catching up on HB.
Grew up in New England and live in Canada; not driving in the snow isn't really an option.
pear / 1609 posts
nope, but it doesn't snow here so I'm good
We went to Chicago when it was snowing and I refused to drive! DH loved it though.

Yup. I'm from Mass and now I live in Nashville so I don't consider what we get here to be real snow!

Snow is fine. Ice sucks. Slid around a bit today as they have not plowed or salted the highway ramps.

Yes! My dad was very good about teaching us how to drive in bad weather.
Today was kinda gross, though. We got 4 inches last night and at least that again today, and some of the slush had turned to ice. I didn't feel unsafe, but errands that should have taken me about 3 hours took me 5. Everything takes a lot longer!

Living in Northern Canada you drive more in snowy weather than summer weather so yes!
papaya / 10570 posts
Yep. People go crazy here though when it snows. Panic sets in, workplaces close early, the supermarkets sell out of bread and batteries, the road network grinds to a virtual halt - anyone would think it's zombie armageddon.

We made it home alive! I always assume we're gonna die in a fiery car crash... glad the roads were salted and plowed pretty well!!

@mrbee: yay glad y'all made it home safely! Time for hot chocolate.

That's why both our vehicles have 4x4. If we didn't we would have to stay in the house Nov-March. I also only have a 4 minute commute to work and DH has a 15 min drive. You get used to it. Slow and steady.
honeydew / 7283 posts
yup - just drove home from work in the snow and I'll be doing the same thing on the way back in the morning! I'm going to take DH's SUV in the AM.
pomegranate / 3053 posts
I would if the main roads are cleared. But we have an all-wheel-drive SUV so I feel better about driving in the snow. Now we don't have to worry about it. It doesn't snow where we live.

Back when I lived in PA, sure, 4-6 inches was nothing. Yeah, I had to be careful but I went to work. This is just for snow. If ice was involved I would be a bit more cautious.
Now that I live in WA, snow terrifies me. The roads, the drivers… it can be such a disaster. If it doesn't happen during rush hour and it melts before I have to drive, then I'm fine with it. Once I hear of snow during rush hour, I get really anxious and would rather take a vacation day or work from home, if I can.
I've become such a wuss now that I live out west.
I do have a AWD car but I know that having AWD doesn't make you invincible to drivers or bad road conditions.

In Toronto -- yes. Cars are equipped with snow tires and the snow is usually dry and roads are well salted. Plus most drivers are used to the snow.
In Seattle -- hellllllll no. It's hilly, the roads are narrow, we don't use salt, and most importantly -- the snow usually turns to ice right away due to the temperature patterns. As soon as it snows, there are cars in ditches EVERYWHERE. When it snows or even when there is the threat of snow, I stay home until the weather changes!

Have no choice, and usually it's not a problem. There was one time though, where I drove to my parents outside the city when there was very strong winds, so lots of blowing snow. The road I went down was all open fields and visabilty was 0. I mean, at one point I got out of the car to see if I was still on the road! I drove 10 km/hr all the way there (took 2.5 hr when normally it was 45 min). I will NEVER do that again!

For 6 years of college, yes. I enjoy it as long as idiots stay away from me! Use proper following distances people (the collective people, not y'all)!
I have the perfect car for it these days, but we don't get more than frost here
pineapple / 12234 posts
Nope. The roads are always icy when it snows in the PNW and I've gone spinning too many times to be comfortable!
DH is really great at driving in the snow though and his car handles it well.
bananas / 9229 posts
Yup, we drove in last night's storm. We've driven in a lot of storms...
papaya / 10343 posts
Generally yes. Would be hard not to in Ohio! I don't really worry about myself driving in snow because I grew up doing a lot of it and I know how slow to go and how to keep control. I do worry a bit about other drivers. People who are too nervous in the snow tend to get stuck and/or spin out and that can cause problems for the people coming up behind them! But still, it wouldn't be reasonable to just not leave the house every time it snows so I go regardless.
