We still bought stuff for our LO before the shower, and just adjusted the registry accordingly. If you buy some books, it's not a big deal because there are a million books. If you want to buy a couple toys or outfits, the chances of someone else getting the same exact one is slim. To be safe, keep an envelope with all of your receipts. Trust me, you can never have enough diapers or wipes. We bought 12 packs of our own diapers and maybe 6 packs of wipes, and got a couple more at the shower and still are needing to buy more. Again, just keep all your receipts

Yes! I have hardly bought her any clothes cause that is all people are buying for her. We are going to need to buy all the other stuff, since people aren't buying off the registry as much as we would like.

I will say everyone is buying newborn, 0-3, and 3-6, so at least I will be able to go buy 6-9 when we get to that point.

I got a ton of outfits at my showers, very little gear. I bought a lot of the gear in between showers. Even now at 5 months, we're buying a fair amount of things like play mat, baby gates, high chair, and baby proofing stuff because they weren't necessary in the beginning.

I didn't buy anything until after the showers for that reason, but I was happy to save my money.

I didn't have to buy lo any clothes, in fact she always has too much and she's 18 months old. All her clothes are gifted or hand me downs. But if you want to buy them, you should. You can always return what is gifted and spend that money on other things you need.

I didn't have a shower so that is always an option.

@septemberlove: nope! I just didn't want one but people wanted to buy me things anyway. So I set up a registry and got a bunch of stuff even without a shower! That was nice.

Yes! My mother went crazy thrift shopping for my daughter and I felt like I should buy anything. Then I kind of hated most of what she bought, so it was really lose-lose. I love shopping for her now.

@septemberlove: I think everyone's given you pretty great advice so far! I say go ahead and buy what you want!

I just had both of our showers this past weekend and actually I am really GLAD I bought stuff whenever I did! I was able to streamline my registry (even if I bought stuff myself, I'd mark it as purchased). Now even though I got a couple of duplicates, I won't have as much problem returning and can use store credit! Also, a lot of things I bought myself were things that people did NOT give at the showers (or maybe because I already checked them off on the registry). Things like: bottles, bottle sterilizers, dishwashing rack, anything for myself (nursing bras, postpartum, etc.), laundry stuff, baby-proofing stuff, feeding stuff....
Also, clothes-wise, I didn't register for ANYTHING and we did okay - we didn't get a ton of clothes, and I'd say even half of those are going back if they can! I'm picky!
Also, people didn't get us any big baby items really. We bought our own stroller, crib, dresser, etc. I had another stroller registered and it was untouched. We probably only had 3 big ticket items that were purchased by family or our very BFFs. So if you want/can get those for yourself, I'd think it's fine!

yes, we said we weren't going to really buy anything until we had our first shower. we got so much stuff at my shower(not that i'm complaining!!!) that we literally only had to buy a breastpump(yay, fun! lol). for christmas i felt the same. my MIL and SIL went way overboard on DS and were like 'honestly, you don't have to buy him anything!' well how's that fun for me?
