For example, if there's an old pair of underwear from high school... would you just toss it out without asking? Or do you make a pile of things to throw out, and ask for permission first?

Hell yes!! If I didn't nothing would ever get thrown out. Sometimes he catches me though. Whoops. Now I've learned to go right to the outside garbage can and not leave anything in the inside cans where he can find it!!!

Sometimes....like old work shirts that I know don't fit him or stuff I know he could care less about (holey underwear included). However, I tried throwing away a stretched out holey waffle shirt from approximately 15 years ago and he had a fit! I bought him some new ones from the gap and then we agreed to throw out the ratty waffle shirt.

Not really, only because my DH is ADHD and is constantly throwing things away, so I don't even get a chance to. But since I do the laundry, I do throw away a pit-stained undershirt every so often and since I'm the one responsible for replacing them I don't get any grief

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! When we first got married, DH threw out 2 of my mugs. One that my sister gave me for graduation. It was relatively new and had sentimental value. The other was a BRAND NEW beautiful, seasonal, flowery mug set from Starbucks. BRAND NEW.
I said DH and I never fight.. but I WAS SO PISSED when he did this.
I've never been angrier at him. I got over it eventually. (can you tell?) HAHAHA But yeah. after this incident he learned not to throw anything that belongs to me away.

I sure do! If left to his own devices he would keep all his clothing no matter how ratty looking. He did get upset when I threw out a sweater that he used to wear all the time the other day but I had bought him a new one for Christmas so I pretty much told him to suck it up!

If it weren't for me tossing out old items he could be on an episode of Hoarders. Just yesterday another pair of boxers bit the dust. I don't talk about it/make a big deal about it but I don't hide it either. In the trash it goes!

OMG with the underwear talk!!
But yes, I will throw away holey undies or ones that have lost their elasticity. I have a problem. I like to throw things away. If I think it won't be used or hasn't been used in over a year, I want to throw it away. He ... on the other hand ... thinks there is a muli-purpose use for everything and keeps EVERYTHING. His closet (in his game room (aka the dump) is full of old shirts and pants that he will never fit into again, yet he refuses to get rid of them. And I'm not allowed to get rid of anything in that room. Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggghhhh!!!

*raises hand sheepishly* I started throwing out ratty underware a few years back, and I actually keep a pack of new underware in the laundry room and will cycle in new ones when I throw out old ones to be sneaky. When he finally caught on that I've been cycling in new underware (for over a year!) he was totally miffed, it was hilarious!

When we first started living together, I was nice and put everything in bags for him to look over when he had time. I even sorted it all for him, it was so easy ... but it took months, no a year -- he didn't "sort" it out (i.e throw it away) until we moved into our first house!
Even his old, small, holey underwear from high school, I had to convince him about finally letting them go! This man will hold on to everything if I don't put a stop to it! Now we have "underwear evaluation" - basically I have to check his undies for holes every once in awhile before he agrees to buy new pairs -_-

No way, he'd kill me! If he's had it since high school, he's obviously attached to it. I wouldn't want him to throw out my stuff, so I won't throw his stuff out either.

I always ask. When he moved from one apartment to another, I threw out his "Cosby" sweaters he never wore and were hideously ugly. Now as we're married, some of his ancient t-shirts get regulated to the dresser not the closet where his active shirts are. The shirts in the dresser are only for wearing around the house not out in public.

I should add that I tried teaching him a lesson by making one of his already holey undies, more holey ... as in crotchless. Every once in awhile, he accidentally grabs that pair (usually when he's almost out of undies and need to do laundry) and it never fails to crack me up! Aside from a few laughs, it didn't really work.

I tried while we were dating, and he rescued it from the trash bin. (It was his old wide-leg khakis from high school... I could fit my whole body into each leg.) Since then I've learned my lesson. We pack away all the old stuff he doesn't wanna throw out. This includes translucent t-shirts from kindergarten ("it was a nightshirt back then! it fits me now!"), boxers so stretched out and with such big holes they don't serve a purpose anymore ("they were my first pair of boxers!"), and BOXES AND BOXES of old receipts (which actually have come in handy for returns before).
I also force him to watch Hoarders with me and that really motivates him to throw out stuff he doesn't need or use. Haha.
We donate OFTEN to our local salvation army. I actually feel bad for them sometimes... we leave STACKS of garbage bags filled with clothes and other random stuff at their back door at random times of night.

um, I love how this thread has basically become the "old underwear" thread. So glad to know I'm not alone.

Things have mysteriously not made it out of the dirty clothing pile, if that's what you're asking. My hubs doesn't throw clothing away, or boxers. He will wear things that aren't even comfortable to him, oddball. I've tossed a few things, mostly the boxers and socks that have to go. He's also into wearing the same old basketball jerseys that he's gotten in every tournament, league, whatever, since the age of 14... 14! He's 31. Those are old and gross. But they're too nostalgic to get rid of- bummer, cuz they stink!

I don't, but I have to really make a scene for him to throw anything out. It's frustrating. I have no problem getting rid of clothes I haven't worn in a year or more, so I dont understand why he can't do the same! Haha!
He never throws out anything of mine either.
