I put some ribs in my crockpot today before I left the house. It's the first time I've ever made something that wasn't covered in liquid in my crockpot. I think I'm going to worry about it catching fire all day.... (I did use a recipe so, I shouldn't worry but still....)

Yes. I usually cover with liquid but I assume there should be enough drippings from the ribs you will be fine.

I always cover things in liquid...otherwise I find it dries out real bad in mine. My crockpot is 25 years old, haha. It was a wedding gift to my mom....I hope your ribs turn out well!

I never leave it on when I leave the house. Even when I'm home I check it every 30minutes. I'm super paranoid!

Yes. I leave it as far away from everything flammable on the counter as possible! Now that we have a nanny I don't worry as much though, since I know someone will be home.

No. Crock pots are perfectly safe to leave on all day unattended. That's their sole purpose.

I don't worry about it at all. I've made several recipes that don't require full liquid and it's always been fine.

I dont have a crockpot, but I definitely would feel nervous about leaving something on all day. I even worry about my rice cooker so I dont use the timer feature

I always worry about low liquid recipes so I only make them when I'm at home.

@mediagirl: Don't worry at all! I leave it on all day unattended like twice a month. The outside is cool for a reason.

Not really. I normally leave mine on warm all day as the cooking temp so even if I'm away from the house for more than 8 hours it'll be okay. I've also used a timer to stop the cooking process after so many hours if I'm worried even the warm setting will dry out the eat.
Ribs sweat a lot so I'm sure you're okay!

Yes, and that’s why I don’t. My life would be so much easier if I could come home to a fully cooked meal but that’s not a risk that I’m willing to take. I work 45 minutes from home so if something were to happen, it’s not like I could get there quickly. Maybe if I didn’t have any pets I wouldn’t be so paranoid but I do and I am.

I used my crockpot today too without any liquid in it. I never even use my crockpot....this post is making me worry a bit!

I use my crock pot a few times a week and would never even think of having a problem with it. Just like @ladyfingers said, that's their sole purpose. :))

Nope, no problem with it! Crockpots are meant to be left on for long periods of time.
Just make sure that if you are home, that you don't peak inside, and to always keep the lid on. Whenever you take the lid off, all the heat/steam ecapes and it messes with the cooking time!

I leave mine on all day and never give it much though... apparently I should, haha! Oops... My recipes are all pretty heavy on liquid though, does that make a difference?

No, I don't worry about it at all. I grew up with my mother preparing it in the morning before we all left for school/work. Now, I only use it on days that I know I won't be home much and won't have time to cook a meal otherwise.
It's one of the perks of having a crockpot...instant dinner when you get home!

I worry but I still do it. Typically I am out of the house for 10/11 hours so I just make sure there is nothing near it on the counter. The counter will be warm under the crockpot but not anywhere near 'start a fire' hot. Have never had an issue with anything burning either! Let us know how they turn out!

I also leave my crockpot on all day long with no one home. I figure that's what they are there for. But I totally understand why someone would be scared to do this- my SIL won't leave anything plugged in when she leaves the house... A home in their neighborhood had a bad fire last year so I totally see the reasoning.

I'm paranoid and only use it while I'm home, or running errands and not out all day.

Before we got our pup I did all the time. Now that we have the dog I don't. He is crated and alone all day. I'd never forgive myself if something happened to him.
