My son doesn't like the typical toys that most 2 1/2 year olds like. I tried some of the toys listed on Mrs.Bee's toy guides but he's not that interested in them. The only things he seems to like lately are books, puzzles, trains, legos and anything with numbers. I feel bad whenever he receives a toy from a friend/family member and doesn't show any interest in it.
Anyone else have this problem? I'm having a hard time figuring out what to get him for Christmas!

Haha yes, I've stopped trying. We just got out a lot. It sounds like your son plays with more toys than my daughter. Her playroom from this weekend is still completely immaculate. She did not touch one toy over the course of two days!

DD is only 10.5 months, but I find that most "toys" don't interest her. She is happier with things that aren't toys, ie: car keys, beans in a water bottle, hairspray bottles... I actually stopped buying her toys because none of the "top toys" seem to appeal to her.

@Andrea: I remember we talked about this like a year ago! haha. I guess both of our kids are stilllll the same. I remember your daughter didn't like the stroller either. I tried putting my son in his stroller this weekend and all hell broke loose!

@Andrea: Oh yeah! Someone asked me that too! hahahaha. So funny. Unfortunately though, my husband ends up carrying him everywhere because when he gets tired, he wants to be picked up. He'll only sit in the stroller if we give him snacks to eat. But after he's done, he wants to walk again. I swear, our kids would be good friends. haha. What are you getting your daughter for Christmas then???

I know how you feel. It's so hit or miss with DD 's toys. She doesn't really like dolls but has several. I want to get her a dollhouse but am afraid to invest in something she might not like. She likes puzzles so I keep buying new puzzles but they are such a mess. I found that DS is less picky about toys but he takes a while to grow into them. He frequently will start playing with a toy way later than the minimum age listed on the toy.

@T-Mom: Yes, I noticed that too. My son will be interested in a toy later than the age listed. Except for puzzles and legos and books. I was thinking about getting him a train table but he's not obsessed with trains so I don't want to invest into that if he doesn't care that much about it. Ay yay yay.

@banana: you know I don't think I have seen one kid who was not obsessed with a train table! Eve DD loves them when we go to the dentist or Barnes and noble. It's on my future to buy list for DS!

My LO will choose to play outside with dirt and sticks every time over a piece of plastic junk. The only toy that will definitely get played with is a ball. I say just get more books!

@Andrea: @T-mom: That's the thing. He'll be super interested in something (like the train table at the bookstore) so we'll go out and buy it for him right away. But he won't play with it at home! And if it's a small toy, I don't mind because we can always put it away for later use. But a train table is so big! What if he doesn't play with it?
He was obsessed (OBSESSED) with the Little Tikes red car thing at a friend's house. So we bought him one a week later and he played with it for 10 minutes at home. But whenever we go over to their house, he's obsessed with it again. Go figure. Can't figure this dude out!

@Baby Boy Mom: Yeah, I just put 5 more books on my Amazon cart just now. I don't know what else to get him! Maybe I'll buy him a new legos set. He's very particular about the pieces though. Grrrrr..

My baby is nearly 8 months and she loves everything whether its a toy or not. she especially loves cellphones and remote controls

Not sure which trains or tracks yet. When I ordered it a few weeks ago, there was a promotion and it came with some free set so maybe we'll just start with that.

@Andrea: Cool! Maybe I"ll try to convince my MIL to get him one for Christmas. I was thinking about getting him a play kitchen initially, but I don't know if he would enjoy that either. He likes playing with it at his daycare though.

@banana: there are so many other building blocks if he likes legos. i'm going to write a guide on it.
the play kitchen is hands down our most played with toy ever. we've had it since charlie was 9 months and he still plays with it all the time at 3 years. i guess every kid is different, but charlie seems to love all the toys i buy. i don't buy that many because he plays with the same ones over and over again (kitchen, blocks, puzzles, art, play doh -- the classics!)

@banana: Maybe you could look for a gently used train table so you don't break the bank if he doesn't like it. I see those on craigslist all the time, lots of times with all the trains. Another "big" toy idea that was popular with DD is a climbing structure. We actually got a lot of use out of it since DS is playing with it now. But again, another large item that your DS may not like :-T

@banana: we have a play kitchen and it's gotten some good usage. We've had it since she was 8 months old and she used to play with it more when she was younger. I'm sure your DD will also play with that when she is old enough?

@Andrea: We ended up getting him a train table. He played with it a lot at first but not so muh anymore. we're thinking about getting him a play kitchen next. Have you found any new toys that your DD likes? Need some ideas!

We did geotrax trains for G.... Played with them for years! I think the fact he could easily add sets to make bigger track designs helped.
I don't know anything about toy kitchens though, G never had one.

@banana: good that he played with it a lot at first! She spends most of her time drawing at the moment. I am debating whether or not it's worth getting her an easel. She seems happy enough with a piece of paper and markers so maybe I won't waste my money!

Not anymore. I just ask him what he wants and he usually says Star Wars Legos, lol.
