I already get mad and my lo isn't old enough to understand. We don't swear in our house and I hate that he's going to hear it from other sources.

use of that word would offend me, whether LO was there or not there, because as @grizz: said, it's a cruel term used to denigrate people.

as for the run of the mill four-letter words, i have a potty mouth so i can't really judge others, but excessive use would irk me.

i'm sorry they were using that word around the kids, and that they didn't take you seriously when you asked DH to stop. it was good of you to speak up--the kids saw that also and at least they know there is something unacceptable about the term.

In general I don't get too upset about language because LO is still too young to understand and hubs and I can both have a potty mouth at times.

But the use of that particular word would offend me regardless of my LO. That's not a word I ever use or ever want used in my presence. Good for you for speaking up!

When I first read the thread topic I thought, meh, swear words here and there aren't a big deal. But racist, bigoted language is an absolute no.

OMG I would be mad and offended myself...throw the fact in that LO is around and I would be irate. I abhor any sort of hateful, discriminatory language of any kind and can't imagine how I would have reacted in that situation ...probably went a little crazy mama bear!!

Potty mouth type swear words are different to me and not as concerning While I hope to limit LOs exposure to them, my blood wouldn't boil as much as hearing hate words. My 93 year old grandma swears like a trucker now that she's getting older and there's no hope changing her! We joke LOs first word will be a swear word, lol.

I have a potty mouth, and so far, since D can't understand anything yet, I haven't tried to curb it yet. I should start working on it, though, because i know it'll be tough to break the habit. But words like that are different in my mind, and yes, I will be pissed if people say things like that around him. And I will speak up. Hubs and his brothers have "code words" for things like that (for example, they say reek instead of the other r-word) and even that makes me angry and I really don't want D picking that up and using it. I'm not sure how to handle it though, because Hubs's defense is always, "But at least I'm not saying the real word." No, but close enough. UGH.

I'd get much angrier about a slur like that than a swear word. I'd also say something even if LO wasn't around. So yes, I'd have been furious especially if the baby was around.

Same as @Mrs. Polish: here! I would be way peeved, and mine are way too little to understand or repeat. Not cool behavior at all.

I agree, I'd be a lot angrier about a slur than a swear. I have a potty mouth that I'm working on so swears don't bother me that much, unless they're repeatedly swearing, or screaming curse words.

We were on the boardwalk in Rehoboth a few weeks ago and this guy was on his phone dropping F-Bombs left and right. An older guy yelled at him.

That would have bothered me, there's some words that irk me more than others. I can handle people dropping an occasional sht, dmn, fck, around LO without caring (it's different when it's constant) but other words that are about someones sex or orientation or race bother me a lot more. I don't use them and I would be a lot more horrified if LO repeated one of those words.

Just letting one slip? I've probably done that at some point around kids. After age 1 I will be more cautious about what is said in front of LO, although nobody that sees her now is a big cusser so not a huge change.

I have an insane potty mouth and my biggest rule is to "know your audience". I know what friends i can and cannot use certain words around. Meeting new people I'm always on my best vocab behaviour and go by their lead.

In this situation I would have been pissed, and the fact that you weren't taken seriously would have infuriated me even more.

I thought you just meant a 4 letter word. Um, that word is not acceptable to use. Even if there are no kids around .....

@mrbee: I feel like my child hearing swear words won't be a huge deal because of the "teachable moment" you mentioned. That's when parenting comes in, because I can't control everyone around me. Also, I swear sometimes and actually don't think they are "bad" words. But I wouldn't curse around other people's children.

But, that word, that slur. That's no good. I would definitely tell someone to stop saying slurs in my presence & in my son's presence. It's hateful and ignorant and hurtful and shows a lack of integrity. @zippylef: good for you to tell them to stop; you were a good role model for those kids!

We swear in our house so that doesn't bother me. BUT I am very cautious around other peoples kids. Hateful language (such as your example) would just piss me off. Especially if I asked them to stop and they don't. I would just leave.

With the latest controversies (Paula Deen and Big Brother) may people jut don't know what they are doing.
