DH is salaried so whenever he has meetings outside normal working hours he has to cut those hours elsewhere which is always nice to have "extra" time off.
He has a company Christmas party tomorrow and he is technically "paid" for it because he was able to cut those hours earlier this week. I never thought employees would get paid for company parties!

Not unless it's during business hours! Even then, we get only 4 hours a year for "social leave", so you have to use it wisely!

No... I've never heard of a company paying for people to attend a party! Employee meetings, yes, but never the fun stuff.

Nope, not paid to go. It's awful. I hate how they can have something that is basically "mandatory," hold it on a freaking Saturday night, and then not pay you for it. Have it during work hours or don't make it an expectation for employees to be there.

I'm salaried--but I don't get to cut my hours. If I work late, I work late, I still have to be in from 9 to 5 the next day. Our holiday party used to be fun--with great food, booze, and after hours. Now it's during work hours with some lame holiday cookies and awkward mingling. Boo.

I always thought that if you are salaried, you dont have to worry about making up hours for work functions. If i have something during work hours, like a christmas lunch, then i guess technically i am paid since they arent going to deduct those hours from our paycheck. I love lunches with the bosses! Honestly, i think most salaried employees work enough unpaid overtime that the company can ignore a couple of hours for a christmas party!

Not paid to go, but they do kick in for some of the cost of our dinner at the restaurant. I'm the same as many above, I have to work 9-5 every day, if I stay late it doesn't mean I get to come in late the next day.

I have never heard of "cutting hours." If you're salaried, you have to work every day... if you have to work outside of business hours, that's on top of your normal hours.

Nope, but they have awesome parties (awesome food, unlimited open bar, paid cabs to and from) and they are tons of fun!

@mrbee: yeah im salaried too and never heardof this either. If i work late, i work late. Within reason, if have a personal appointment I leave early. As long as i generally put at least 40 hours in and do my job, thats that.

i thought being on a salary meant you were never on a clock and never got paid overtime (which i'm assuming is the point of cutting hours). or maybe the difference is exempt vs non-exempt.
i use to be on a salary and worked anywhere from 50 to 90+ hours each week. there was definitely no cutting hours.

Ya I am salaried and I've never heard of cutting hours either! I generally work 40 hours, sometimes more, sometimes less. If we have fun events during work hours I don't need to make them up, per se, but I do still need to get all my work done so it might mean I need to stay later than I normally would.

I'm salaried and we don't get comp hours for work related events either. And we are asked to go to lots of fundraisers, so we have "work parties" all year round.

No, I'm a consultant so all of my work needs to be billable. Plus, it is on a Saturday evening! No one goes because of that, but they still insist on throwing away money.

I'm salaried and work unlimited hours, so no. It happens at like 5 p.m. on a weeknight which is sort of a bummer. Used to be a black tie affair on the weekend, but....dumb economy.

My DH is salaried as well, but it is not based on actual work hours. It's more like "you work for us, and we pay you X" so it doesn't matter if he works a normal day, or like yesterday when he worked for 16 hours, today is a normal day.
His Xmas party though, is a taxable benefit. So it gets added to an income line on our tax forms, as it is more than a $500 benefit. So in some ways, we 'pay' for it by extra taxes!

We don't have one every year but when we do have them we usually get paid like 2 hours for the day since we're off the rest of the day. So I guess we do?

Nope. I'm salaried so no matter how many hours I work (plus or minus the 40), I don't get paid extra. Our christmas party is on a Saturday so doesn't matter.
