I know it can be a lot worse. But I can't wait for the day where he has a "normal" Monday thru Friday 9-5 job!
As it stands now he works 2-3 nights a week till 9pm. Sometimes they are all a 11hr day. He always works Saturdays so our only family day is Sunday.

Yes! We don't even have a family day during the school year. DH works W-Sun. He works W-F 2:30 PM - 11 PM. He works Sat and Sun 2 PM - 10:30 PM. The local RR might be striking this weekend (on my birthday) so he is going to be working a ton of overtime this week and next week. See you in a few weeks, DH.

I do, but I shouldn't complain. He used to work night shift and it was awful. He works 8:30-5:30 now but doesn't get home til 6:15 and it makes getting dinner ready hard. I know others have it wayyyyyy worse!!

@locavore_mama: Yep! He is in consulting, and this current client is in NYC. So he leaves at 5am Monday morning for a 630 flight. Then Thurs night he is on the 5/530 flight, which is never on time, so he gets home anywhere between 9pm-430am. Next month he starts on another client, so will be in Chicago.

It is awful and somewhat good at the same time. He is gone 4 days a week, but home the entire day for 3 days...we look forward to those 3 days!

I hate it. He works until midnight or later 6 out of 9 days on a rotation, and always works Sundays 6 am-noon or 1 at a second job, which he also has to practice for during the week. We see each other 30 minutes a day if we're lucky.

@yellowbird: Pretty much. It is rare to get a client that is in town. So until he gets a new job, 2 years away from that, this is it. It is really starting to take a toll on me. I can't wait till the end of Aug when he will be home for training for the week.

Yep, he works 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. And it's a small family business that is owned by his workaholic dad, so there's no regular vacation time or anything. I hate it so freaking much. I wish there was some way he could be the stay at home parent, but unfortunately it's just not possible.

It's not bad at all, but I wish he didn't have to work late so often. He works a lot of 12 hour days lately so he hardly ever seen LO during the week. But lately, he's been getting her in the morning and giving her morning bottle, so at least they have that time together at 6 am!
I kind of miss his old job, which was less stress and where he was almost always home at 5:30ish. Now he's "early" if he's home by 7 and "late" means...forget it. haha

We're lucky in that we have a traditional 9-5 schedule with flexibility to start early and leave early. But with that, comes some work weekends for releases. It has been manageable so far, but I am coming up on a period of work weekends this fall, so we'll see how that goes.

Wow, reading this thread has really made me appreciate DH's work schedule. He leaves most days at 6:40 and is back at night by 4:45. On Fridays he is home by 4. He also has the option to take every other Friday off but he has been working then due to lots of transitions at his firm.

I don't hate it; I knew the life we'd have when I started dating him! It's already gotten better now that he mostly has Sat's off vs before I never have him on weekends and he's off during the week when I'm not! But that can change again so I'm savoring it!

Ugh, yes. DH is a medical resident so he leaves the house at 530 am and on a good day is home around 6. 4 days off a month and longer days on the weekend days he works. I also WOH FT so I do all the morning routine with LO, daycare drop off and pick up and dinner. This is the schedule for wards months (inpatient hospital) of which I think there are 8 months this first year?
My biggest frustration is the lack of control he has over his schedule. Like if I wanted to do an activity or teach a class one night out of the week, there is no way for him to schedule that to be a lighter day or anything. Thabkfully my work has been understanding but still.

Yes and no. I hate that I never know what to expect, but we're both pretty independent people, so I do love having lots of "me" time.
He works in a restaurant, so his hours range from 8-5 to 5-2. I don't hate the hours as much as I hate that he rarely remembers to send me his schedule and it changes every week.

@wonderstruck: Are we living a parallel life? DH and I both work for my workaholic Dad, I only work 35 hours a week while DH works 60+. I feel for you on the vacation, we get 2 weeks but rarely do any of us (myself, DH, Dad, my brother, sister and BIL) take all of it. It sucks but also has its perks.

@petunia354: It's the worst! I'm a SAHM so it's not as tough around the house for me as it probably is for you (although it can get lonely), but the vacation part is tough! His dad was totally uninvolved when they were kids, so he doesn't get why DH wants a week off work when I have the baby, and he doesn't understand why I like to take a week-long family vacation every year. When DH was a kid his dad never came on their vacations - it's so crazy to me! Luckily my MIL has my back on the vacations, but she still sees child raising as women's work (huge eye roll from me there) and says, "Oh, you don't need him around when the baby is born! It's easier doing it by yourself because then you can just do everything your way!" Um, no thank you...
Apparently I needed to vent, thanks for listening. Haha!

I don't mind. He works hard and does the best he can to be home for dinner. He tends to eat dinner and then work till midnight or later. He's always worked a ton so I'm used to it.

Yes. It's not as bad as it could be though. He works about a zillion hours a week for not a whole lot of money and I do hate it. But he loves what he does and is really good at it, which I'm a fan of. And he does have some flexibility in his schedule when he's not on assignment or deadline (which is daily in his field, but he gets an hour in the morning or afternoon free here and there).

Right now I love it. Usually he works 6:30am-7/8pm with occasional weekends and a long commute and that's really hard, but this summer he's onsite locally and works 7:30-3:30 with a TON of flexibility. Having him close by has been so amazing and really helpful with our renovation and move.

Yep. He works 11-12 hours at the office, then comes home to work from home until 12-1am. It's not sustainable. My poor guy!

It;s much better than it used to be. He makes an effort to be home for dunner every night and tries to limit the amount of work he does in the evenings/weekends.

Does ANYONE actually have a 9-5 any more? My husband works 8:30-6 most days, which isn't bad, but he often gets very little time with M in the evenings. And often logs back into work at some point during the evening anyway. Two nights ago we were in bed about to fall asleep at 10pm and he had to get up and deal with some sort of work drama. But I'm lucky he goes into work a little later and can do drop off because I get to my office at 7:30am so I can leave at 4 to do pick up.

Dang, I shouldn't complain bc a lot of you have it way worse! I would like my DH to be home earlier though. I guess on average he's usually home by 8pm. I got spoiled growing up, my dad was always home by 4:30!

Wow! I feel incredibly blessed. DH leaves for work around 7 and gets home at 3. We have very similar schedules because we both teach.

Yes - he works a week of nights, a week of days, and the a week off. Even when he works days it is hard because he wakes up around 3 so by 7-8 at night he is falling asleep on the couch. I didn't mind so much when we had no kids or even just had one. Now that we have two, it is way harder on me at night getting them ready for bed. I am so dreading how it will be once I'm back at work and trying to juggle both boys!

Right now DH is in training so he works 8-430 Monday to Friday so I like that. (Well technically right now he's on his parental leave, so I like that even more!)
Once training is over he's back on shift. That consists of twelve hour days and nights. For example 2 nights on 2 days off 3 days on. Etc. he works 2/5 weekends while on shift. It will be ok because I'm a SAHM so I will see him on off days.

I hate my schedule. I used to work weekends, now I work evenings. I dream of the day I have a 9 to 6 schedule like my H! That would be amazing.

yup! working 7 days a week from 2am till 2pm so I always get the night shift and still have to go to work then come home and have baby duty too. I love, love DS and he's an easy daytime baby but his non-existent night time sleep is doing a number on me. Thankfully, it seems to be improving!! *knocks on wood*

@Smurfette: Consulting schedules are the worst, especially when the engagement is so far away. 
Does he ever deal with clients in town/state?
I am lucky that DH has a flexible schedule. He works from 8:30am until 9-9:30pm twice a week, but he comes home at 6pm for dinner for an hour since it's only a 5 minute bike ride away. I work from home two days a week so he will work 9-4:30 on those days.

@Freckles: Nope! He was working on an inhouse project for a good 9+ months, including the first 11 weeks of R's life, so that was nice having him home. But he hasn't ever gotten lucky with a client in town.

DH is home between 7-8pm. It's not terrible but I do wish he could get home slightly earlier to see LO and to help with dinner and bedtime. Oh well!
