I'm wondering if this is a regional thing. Most houses around here have basements, it's pretty common. Do you have a basement?

No. They're not really common here, but a lot of newer subdivisions have them as an option you can add. If I could afford a new build, I'd totally get a basement!

No. I'm in Florida..... we can't have them because we're too close to the water.

Yes in NoVA. We renovated it to have a guest suite with a bathroom when I was pregnant with Little M so my parents could stay for longer periods and not have to sleep next to the baby's room upstairs!

Nope. Even though I'm in the Midwest, many of the older homes in my area just have crawlspaces. A basement is a requirement for our next place. I'd love to have the room for storange and space for a treadmill (I had to give this up for the nursery!).

Yep, in the DC area. This is the first one I've lived in with a basement.

Yep. It's actually really uncommon NOT to have a basement where I live.

Yesp. We have our living/media room down there, laundry room and a full bathroom.

Yes - most house in and around have a basement, however my parents and many of the house in their subdivision in South jersey do not (Built in the 80's they chose not to add it on)

Growing up in CA I'd never seen or heard of basements, and until I moved into a house on the East Coast I didn't know the difference between and attic and a basement!
@Chillybear: That's surprising...I'm in SJ and we definitely have basements (built in the 90s), many of them finished.

Yep. Our basement is pretty big, but it's unfinished. We don't really go down there very much!

Yes, we wouldn't buy a house unless it had a basement! I wouldn't want the washer and dryer on the main level!! Way too much noise all the time!

@lolabee: interesting! ETA: I mean a basement was a must for us too...so I guess I could see that

@spaniellove: they had their house built and opted not to add the basement due to cost. In fact when they moved in the down stairs was unfinished

We have one, but I don't love our basement. It's only half the footprint of the house and part of it is dark and scary. The other part serves as our pantry. The only bummer about our new house is that we have less storage than we did before!

YES. We live in Kansas and have actually seen tornadoes from our front porch so it's non-negotiable! Honestly, I don't understand why so many houses in the midwest are built as slabs. Kinda pisses me off.

@Bao: LOL yeah, I guess you could say that We've been lucky that there haven't been any that have hit where we live, just close enough to gawk at. Of course we're all backwoods rednecks out on our porch drinking beer watching the storms

@Bao: Well my opinion has changed some since becoming a mama, I'm def. not outside anymore! My Dad totally was freaking out last spring when a storm rolled through and I was PG. He tried calling but couldn't get through. Pretty sure he was pooping his pants.

@Bao: Hehe thanks, I'll start a thread later this spring if anything crazy happens and tag you
