We had a pretty big one (30-40 ppl) at home last year for his first, it's custom in Korean culture and I did want to do some of the traditional things like the doljabi, etc. with family/friends. But this year, I don't have energy to plan, decorate, etc.
Want to keep it small/quaint. And we also want to spend QT celebrating with both sets of grandparents and going on our annual bday trip to TRU instead! 
How about you? Do you always throw parties? How do you find energy?

I just love planning parties, so I can't resist. We had big ones for his first and second. I'm going to try to keep it small for his third, but we'll see.

We will have one every year. When she is older, she will have 2. One for friends and one for family. Family is just low key though as she gets older, birthday banner, food, cake, and beer and done. Family is still 30-40 people.
I think you can make it stress free.

Nope. We did a big first birthday party for A and will do a big first birthday party for E and then won't likely have another until they are in school and can have friends over for a party.

I don't plan on it. Maybe a small one for friends once she is old enough to ask, but it's not going to be a big blowout every year. Party planning stresses me out and makes me very tired.

I am leaning toward not doing anything big for a second birthday. She isn't in school so doesn't really have friends. I am thinking on the actual day we would have a special breakfast with lots of gifts and balloons and then cupcakes after dinner. My sons 4th birthday is coming up and he is already party planning, so don't think we will get out if that one!

We had a big one for his first birthday, and that's enough for us for a while - this year instead we took LO on a long-weekend trip to Montreal, something fun and different.

We had a big one with friends and family for his 1st, but just immediate family for his 2nd. My mom and MIL don't get along well, so I'd rather keep the parties at a minimum.

Just a big one for their 1st birthdays. Just a small family dinner and cake for DD's 2nd and 3rd birthdays. Not sure what route to take with DD's 4th and DS's 2nd birthdays yet, but they're coming up soon!! (Jan and Feb!)

We had a big one with friends/family for his first (~30 people), but we don't want to do that again. We're trying to decide now if the next few birthdays will just be our immediate family (all four of us) or if we should include grandparents and aunts/uncles (~15 more people)...

I don't plan on it. We live a few hours from family and none of my friends have kids. I'd rather do something fun as a family than throw a big party.

For sure. If she continues to desire a party every year as she gets older it will be explained to her that the party is part of her gift (those babies are expensive, even when they're simple!) Birthdays were always a big deal when I was growing up & DH always whines about ho he never really got a party so we will throw parties unless LO asks for something else.

Yes, I plan to throw a party every year. For her first birthday we invited around 40 people and it was my condo's party room. It was A LOT of work. This year I definitely don't have the time and energy to put into it so I booked a play room venue where they take care of food and decorations. We could just show up and play.

We had sort of a medium party for her second birthday, then a huge one for her third birthday. After that one, I decided that we'll either have a party that big, but in a park, so I don't have to clean my house before AND after. Or, she can pick a few friends and take them to something really special. But I'm not going to throw another 50 person, most of the day party at my house.

We just did one for her first birthday and I don't think we'll do it again until she is old enough for one with friends of her own. We had 50 people with just extended family (no friends) and we can't fit that many in our home so we had to "borrow" my dad's house for the day. I found it stressful. We will probably just celebrate with my and DH's immediate families for the next few years.

We had a very small one for his 1st (just family) and a big one with friends for his 2nd. I think we'll maybe do another big one for his 5th? Maybe for 3 and 4 I would do a casual playdate with his buddies and have cupcakes or something.
Honestly, the gift overload is what makes me hesitant about having a party every year--we were so inundated with gifts, and of course so grateful--but we really don't have the space!!
