Our door bell no longer works. The sound was obnoxious to begin with so we haven't hired an electrician to fix it yet. I'm thinking a door knocker would be more fun. Usually I see them on the door, but our bell was on a wall. People keep telling me the bell doesn't work. So maybe we should install the knocker over the bell? I don't even know if that would emit sound in the house.

I have the same as you! A door bell that doesn't work!! I always have to watch for people arriving because they try the doorbell and don't realize it doesn't work and then will just leave, assuming we're not there!

We have a doorbell, but everyone seems to knock on our door instead. It works, so i'm not sure why no one uses it! I'd rather hear "ding dong!" than "BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM"

we have a door bell and a door knocker, but everyone uses the bell. I hate it because it makes the dog freak out (even more than a knock at the door)

@Mae: where is the door knocker installed? We have french doors. Would sugget two knockers?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We just have a normal front door so it is in the center under the peephole. I'd maybe just put it on one of the doors. I'm not sure why you'd need two. I don't know that I've ever seen french doors for a front door though-- neat!

Our doorbell also doesn't work & we haven't bothered fixing it. About a year & a half ago we were having pizza delivered & put out a sticky note that said it was broken & to knock loudly. We laugh b/c that faithful lil sticky has stood the test of time through a hurricane, many storms & rain. Classy. Heh.

We have a door bell. When we bought the house we had a new front door installed and the installer cut the doorbell wire and we didn't know. I was sweeping and all the sudden looked up and friends were at the door. They had rung the bell and were wondering why I wasn't responding. The installer had to come back out and get us a new door bell. We like it though.

We just got our house and we don't have anything at present. Folks can either knock directly on the door, or they can call us.
I'm kind of on the fence about whether we really need to install a bell. Most of our friends are apartment dwellers who are used to intercom systems that are hooked up to a cell phone and/or buildings with ancient broken bell systems where you have to just ring up to the person you're visiting anyway.

Intercom since we live in an apartment. One to buzz people in outside, and a second with video monitor on the inside before re-buzzing them. The video camera must be aimed the wrong way since I can never see who is buzzing, although, I can always tell it's the postman's hair.

Our doorbell doesn't work either! Our dog usually announces the presence of someone at the door.

I like the doorbell in our new house. It's a nice sounding one, not the standard "ding dong", more like church bells (but it doesn't go on for too long).
Side note: my in-laws moved into their house last year and have yet to fix their doorbell...it plays various Christmas songs.

We have a doorbell. It's not very loud. Our guests are usually family, and we have two large dogs, so people don't get down the driveway without our dogs barking. So, the doorbell is actually rarely used.

We have a sign on our door that says to call us - if someone we actually want to let in is at our house, they have our phone numbers The baby got woken up too many times by our doorbell/crazy dog combo. Bonus - salespeople just turn and walk away!

we live in an apartment, no doorbell. we would need a land telephone line for the intercom to work, which we don't have, so people call us when they arrive.

we live in an apt, so there's an intercom to get in 2 doors downstairs, and the guest has to buzz in individually for both of them. and then there's a doorbell on our actual door when the guest gets up here. the dogs always FREAK out for all 3 bells so we try to intercept at our front door so it's at least only 2.

we have an intercom to the front of the building, then we usually open our door or they could knock on our door itself. i put in a wireless doorbell at my old place & it went off every time the guy next door opened or closed his garage door and he worked crazy hours so it would go off in the middle of the night all the time. i disconnected the stupid thing. i hate doorbells.

We have a doorbell and I wish it was broken. The dog goes nuts when it goes off. I'm having DH disconnect it close to when DS is supposed to arrive. And if we order food I'm gonna make him intercept the delivery people, lol.

I selected intercom but we haven't gotten it hooked up to our phone yet. Did I mention we've lived here for a year? Yep.

We removed our doorbell when we painted last summer and never put it back up. We do have a cute door knocker from Anthropologie that I love, so we don't miss the bell at. all.

Doorbell, and I hate it- if it broke I wouldn't fix it. Plus we have a dog, he's doorbell enough for us
