@Mamaof2: I was just thinking that's where we should relocate ours!
pomegranate / 3809 posts
Yup! Right outside the kitchen at the garage entrance to the house.

We have three - one upstairs, one in the kitchen and one in the garage.

Funny you should ask, I just bought one last week! It is in our kitchen pantry.

Yes. We keep ours in the entryway-- handy to the kitchen. Mr. T is a volunteer firefighter for our city and he is pretty serious about fire-safety. We also have ladders in the closet of each bedroom upstairs, in case we needed to exit through a window. There are some really great public fire-safety materials available. It's good to periodically think about your fire-safety plan.

@Mrs. Twine: yes, next on my list is to get a foldable ladder! Where did you buy yours? Should we have one for each bedroom? All our bedrooms are upstairs. What do you mean "public fire safety materials" Like at my local fire department?

@locavore_mama: I would have one in each bedroom. The ladders "came" with the house Mr. T's parents lived here before we did and left them for us. I'll have to ask him if he knows of any good resources. Ours are aluminum, I think, but pretty simple.

I know we have to address our plan. We could feasibly jump from the bedroom windows, but ladders would make me feel a whole lot better.
I think we have one extinguisher, but honestly, I know I would be too panicked to use it properly.

We have 2! Also, remember to keep them up to date. An extingusher that doesn't work isn't worth much.

We have one in our laundry room. My brother (a firefighter) has been harassing us because we should have one on each floor and a ladder on the top two levels. I keep forgetting to purchase them!

@rahlyrah: oh, good tip. I should add another one to our next BJs trip.

Yes multiple! I believe at least one on each floor and one in kitchen.

Oh wow so many people have! I don't think we have one. Hmm maybe I need to tell DH to get one!

umm I don't think so... that's probably bad huh? At least in the kitchen? Luckily, knock on wood, I live across the street from the fire station. Adding it to my list for the weekend!

I don't think we do? Adding it to my list, seems like a no brainer to have!

We do, in the kitchen. We didn't buy it, though; it came with our apartment.

We have one in the (attached) garage. We actually just replaced all our smoke detectors before Christmas - I should have added a fire extinguisher for the kitchen to that budget...

We do, in the kitchen at the opposite side from the oven/microwave/toaster oven. I bought it for DH for his birthday after he set something on fire in the toaster oven. It's just a little one, but our building also has a sprinkler system which I assume would kick in if the little extinguisher were not enough.
Weird this thread came up today-- last night as I was struggling to fall asleep, I started thinking about what I would do if I couldn't get out of the apartment to the stairs in a fire, and if it would be safer to jump from the second floor window holding the baby, or drop her to someone below. And that explains my insomnia-- thoughts like that racing through my head. I supposed getting a ladder would banish that particular worry.

wow - I didn't realize how expensive fire escape ladders are!
bananas / 9628 posts
shamefully, we do not. we do have an automatic sprinkler system that would kick on though.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@locavore_mama: I think those are actually reasonable, I was expecting them to be over $100 each.

We just bought one last week! Kidde has some deals online with coupon codes!
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@LindsayInNY: on their site? Good to know!
@looch: in my mind I was thinking $20ish so the MSRP of $60 was a bit of a shock!

@locavore_mama: Check retailmenot.com - that's where I found the discount code!

We have one by our fireplace in our dining room, but now that I think about it -- the kitchen makes so much more sense. Especially since we never use that fireplace! I'll have to relocate it today. :

@LindsayInNY: oh, so awesome! Not only are the fire extinguishers on sale (cheaper than Amazon) on the Kidde site but the 25% off + Free Shipping code still works!
But the ladder is still cheaper on Amazon currently.

Yes, in the kitchen and back in our bedroom and I think there's one hanging by the door in the garage.

@locavore_mama: Wooo! That's the exact one I used! I liked the Kidde website because you can figure out exactly what kind you should have at home. I bought the one you linked to. It's suppose to be a supplementary extinguisher but since we're keeping it in the kitchen, I wanted to be sure it was good for electrical, grease and paper fires.
