I've never felt the need for one... Do you have one? Did you feel differently about needing one after having children?

We don't have one now since we live in a condo building that you have to have a keycard to get in or be buzzed it. We are closing on a house on the 1st and it has one installed already. If it didn't we would have one installed. Since DH travels so much for work I feel better having one being home by myself with a baby. Esp since we have a basement with a door that someone could come in and I would never hear.

Yup! I just feel a better sense of security with it, especially when we're away from the home for an extended amount of time.

We call them Brown Dog and White Dog.
There is a security system hard wired into our house but we've never activated it. Most people in our neighbourhood don't even lock their doors.

Yep! I grew up with one, and installed one in the apartment DH and I rented & we have one in our home now. We don't live in a town where people leave their doors unlocked

Yes. I don't feel like I need one, but it eases my mind. I always had one growing up and I can't imagine having one now. Mine gives me updates to my phone, too, like when the power is out and stuff like that. It's very handy. It's also wired into the police station and fire department so there are other perks, like if an electrical fire broke out. When the kids are older, we get text updates letting us know when someone comes in/out of the house. The kids can have their own codes so we know who is there and who isn't yet. It's pretty amazing

no, but we live on the top floor of a building that you need to have a key or be buzzed into and then you'd have to get into out apartment. when we buy a house we'd like to get a dog, that would be my security system during the day and DH is my security system at night =) if he traveled i would get one though.

We have one in our rental but we didn't activate it. It does chirp when a door is opened though. We plan to get one when we move into an actual house, not just in case someone breaks in but in the event of a fire or carbon monoxide.

Yes, and I am so glad that we do. We live in a safe area, but the economy is terrible around here and there have been so many break-ins in the past couple of years, that I wouldn't feel safe without an alarm. Plus, people are crazy in general in Florida. It's a fact.

Nope. My husband wants video monitoring, though. Inside and out.

@bree72: Florida people are crazy aren't they? This coming from a Canadian, but all the wildest stories come from Florida!

We don't need one now, but once we move to a house we'll have one installed.

@mediagirl: then you could never pick a wedgie in peace! lol!

Nope, no alarm system at my house. We probably should have on in the area that we live in, but it's an added expense that I can't see paying!

Yes, we have one. I grew up with one, and am paranoid, so I just felt better having one installed when I bought my house.

DH's friend installed a security system in our house as a gift to us when we were expecting our LO. We don't have it hooked up to a phone line to call a Central Station, and honestly the last time we used it was when I was in labor and left for the hospital. It became too much work to remember to turn the alarm on and off everyday.

We were lucky to buy a home where the owner had one installed with sensors on just about every window and door and motion sensors everywhere. It's nice because if I'm out and forgot to set the alarm, I can just do it from my phone. I'm glad we have it because although it's a safe area, I hear about too many break-ins where they're looking for jewelry.

I insisted on installing one before we moved into our house. I feel very uncomfortable living without one. My parents' house was broken into while we were all home and asleep when I was in 10th grade. They got a security system right after the break in.

I should add for those who live in condo/apartment buildings...unfortunately the buzzing in or front desk system is never enough. You might not think about it, but the building staff probably has a key to your unit. While we were on our honeymoon one of the building employees used her key and stole my diamond jewelry.

Yep, we have a security system. I feel a lot safer and we got extra coverage like checking for Carbon Monoxide and extra Fire Protection.
pomelo / 5331 posts
Yes. One week after we moved into our house, there were two break-ins on our blocks. We feel safer.

No but when we purchase a home we will have fake security cameras and security signs. My parents just got robbed and we live in a great area so we will do what they did to get a cheaper option but hopefully it will help a little.

I grew up with one, and had one in our previous apartment (that had an outside door), but don't have one now. We're a third-floor walkup with a buzzer, and it just seemed like overkill to pay for that right now.
We're looking at houses now, though, and I know I'll want one (as will DH) in our home.

I live out in the country and I cant even see my neighbors. If someone tried to break in no one would know or see anything. Last summer 3 people in our area were broken in to. We got ADT then.
I have dogs, and for as much credit as I would love to give them in running someone out of there, they were another reason why I wanted it even more. I have heard too many stories of what people have done to the animals in the houses they break into.
Plus I like having the fire detectors too. So if a fire started and we were not home it would still alert and send the FD.

Yeah.. We live in a low-crime area, but still got broken into a few years back. It makes us feel better for the future.
hostess / papaya / 10540 posts
We put one in our own before moving in. We are really happy to have it.
grapefruit / 4311 posts
Wow I'm definitely in the minority - I feel so safe at home, it's never even crossed my mind to think about getting an alarm. I guess it's pretty naive to assume your safe bc you live in a good neighborhood
pomegranate / 3225 posts
We bought the signs and stickers on eBay! Lol! We don't have the system, I don't feel I need it.
