When DD cries with her mouth wide open, we fish hook her.
It makes us laugh and it makes her laugh.

When E throws a fit while I'm changing his diaper (every time- apparently laying down is torture!!!) he always cheers up when I start making animal noises.

My neighbor's 4 year old sometimes cries bc she doesn't want to leave our house. He usually hands her something and says "can you please hold this for me" and she gets distracted by the task that she stops crying. It works great. Or he asks her a question and she gets distracted thinking of the answer that she stops crying.
My pediatrician recommended a book called "raising an emotionally intelligent child" and it kind of discourages distraction and redirection after a certain age though. The author says kids should talk through and work through their emotions...and the earlier they learn to do that the better bc they won't need a distraction as a crutch and they'll be able to cope with unhappy feelings.

@mrbee: I used to do that when my son was a newborn! Nothing that the chilly mountain air couldn't handle! My mom thought I was a nut job and that my son was quieting down because he was afraid I would toss him from the balcony.
