I'm about to toss some of T's size 2-3 undies...and it occurred to me....do people save undies for subsequent children? Or is that a gross thought?!

I'm leaning towards not saving them. I mean, it would probably be fine, but I know I wouldn't want someone's old underwear, no matter how clean it looked, so I'm going with all new for #2.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
Yes we saved them if they were in decent condition. We even used some hand me down undies from my niece for when we were potty training.
It was nice when she had an accident (especially #2) that we just tossed them. Now that she's potty trained she has clean undies with no stains

No - I feel each kid deserves some new things. Underwear would be one of them.

I would reuse them if they are in good condition. I reuse cloth diapers for subsequent kids and those get grosser than undies.

i just bought DS a bunch of underwear as we are about to potty train and i already thought about this and i think i concluded that DS2 will deserve brand new undies when the time comes for him.
nectarine / 2085 posts
Sure, why not? Unless they're in bad shape, I don't see why this would be gross. Bleach them and they'll be fine. The main issue I think is that any elastic on them might be shot.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
No I won't, she is hard on underwear so i will be buying new. I did keep the training pants though as DD hated how "poofy" they were and refused to wear them.

No. Undies are cheap and fun way to motivate during potty training. New for sure!
eggplant / 11861 posts
No, I kinda think this at least can be new given other hand me downs, but I wouldn't be opposed to it if need be
grapefruit / 4355 posts
I don't think it's gross or anything but I feel like underwear is one of those things that is so cheap and easy to get new ones for each kid.
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
No, I feel like each subsequent child should have some new things and underwear is one of them.
grapefruit / 4819 posts
No. I would never wear used underwear and I won't expect my kids to wear used undies either. There's just a bit of a gross factor for me...

I bought new ones for LO 2 but we keep handmedowns from big sister in her cubby at school, some in diaper bags, grandmas house and the car.
Some of our cloth diapers have been worn by all 3 girls!
nectarine / 2115 posts
Hmmm... My first thought was no, but we are using DD's cloth diapers for DS when he arrived, and that's considerably more, uh, personal...! So maybe within reason. That said, I don't remember ever wearing hand-me-down underwear as a kid.

Old undies make the perfect cleaning rags! Just a thought.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
Hmmm, not sure... But I would donate them if you decide not to take them. I'm sure someone less privileged could use them.
persimmon / 1436 posts
Sure, underwear is cotton just like most of the rest of her clothes. We are keeping everything in good shape. I'm sure the younger kids will be getting some new pairs but some of LO's pairs are in excellent shape and it seems incredibly wasteful to throw them out. She had almost no poop accidents, mostly just pee.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
yep, i toss the stained and keep the rest, because really - even if I buy her new ones, they WILL get used. lol. toddlers go through a shit ton of undies, no pun intended!
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
I mean - people save and reuse cloth diapers, swim diapers, bathing suits...
coconut / 8861 posts
I've kept DS #1's character undies because he didn't like them and barely worn them. Maybe DS #2 will like them when the time comes. As for what he's wearing now, I'm' not saving them for DS #2. We did receive some random undies in hand me downs, but it wasn't like 20 of them.
pomelo / 5720 posts
@AB810: I agree totally! We use cloth and got some gently used hand-me-down undies from friends for DS that we used. If I were having more children I would probably save the underwear from DS that were in great condition.
eggplant / 11716 posts
Yup, I'm definitely saving good condition undies. We are pretty early into the potty training game, but LO has yet to have an accident in panties (we are going commando these days), so as long as there aren't poop stains or something (and I wouldn't even have my LO 1 wear something like that anyway), yes LO2 will get them.
pomegranate / 3350 posts
Nope. I will always buy new shoes and new undies.
Although @sorrycharlie: has a good point - I did reuse cloth diapers. Double standard I guess.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Nope. I also would never reuse / buy used swimsuits, cloth diapers, etc. There's an ick factor I can't get over
cherry / 109 posts
Yes! They're brothers! I wouldn't take used undies from anyone else outside immediate family. I'd toss them if they were falling apart. But I've never had underwear stay stained. Bleach and sun. They also wore the same cloth diapers and swimsuits and socks. HORRORS!
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
Ha we use cloth diapers and those were definitely passed down from lo1, so the gender neutral ones we will save and she can get some she picks out too. There is nothing about it that is actually unsanitary, and I got past the ick factor a long time ago.
eggplant / 11716 posts
@skipra: ha, I'm not buying new shoes either. I get rid of the ones that aren't in good shape, but I have a little bit of a shoe problem for LO1, which now I justify by saying they'll all be used for LO 2 (both girls, born in the same season). So I figure the more pairs I buy, the better shape they'll stay in.....haha ;-()
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Haha - aren't used undies just like used cloth diapers? So many people reuse cloth diapers!
I don't know if I would. I found a bunch of them lose their elasticity so they're not really re-wearable.
pomegranate / 3350 posts
@Anagram: Well I have boys and they only get 1 pair of sneakers and either sandals or boots depending on the season so they really get worn out. I don't want to screw up LO2's feet by giving him crappy shoes! Might be a different story if I had a girl with tons of cute shoes though
grapefruit / 4584 posts
I'd figured I would keep any cute ones that are in good condition...we never had cheapie character undies, only nicer ones like carters/gap/gymboree (which I expected to last/wear better than they really did). In over a year I can literally count poop accidents we've had on (less than) one hand, so the undies are still pretty fresh looking, but have started to lose their decorative stitching at the waist/fade. So I won't make DD2 wear those, except maybe while she's FIRST training, or as extras to leave at school.
So I think all I'll really be saving are the Gerber training pants, which were only used for a few months, and still look new because I bought a ton of them.
I also think that choosing brand new undies can be a big potty training incentive for a toddler!

We donate undies, clothes, shoes that don't really merit keeping for possible second baby. Unless an outfit or shoes has special significance then I donate it.
persimmon / 1233 posts
I'm planning to reuse unless they get gross. As of now, LO1 has had very few accidents, and they've been only pee. His undies look as clean as when we bought them so it seems wasteful to toss.
pineapple / 12053 posts
@AB810: this was my thought process too! i ditch any gross ones, but i figure for the early years, more undies is better.
