I really just started, but honestly I'm LOVING knitting! I find it seriously relaxing.
So, do you knit or crochet? What have you made? Did you (or are you planning to) make anything for baby?

I "knit". I'm not very good, and have never finished anything! My son likes to pull all my yarn out while I'm knitting, and my cat attacks it, so I have to do it when I am alone..... whenever that happens! I really want to finish something though, so I am about to start working hard on a scarf. Hopefully it will be done before DD arrives!
Have you finished anything? I would love to see it! Are you making anything for baby?

I knit. I've been knitting on and off since i was 8 or 9.
I've made throws and scarves and dishrags. nothing exciting.
unless I found the cutest ever pattern for something baby related I wouldn't make anything for a baby. I just personally don't think knitted items are "cute".
ETA: I think crocheting is much more of a "cute" look.

I've made a kitty "blanket" ( http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i3HBu9qfrCA/TpX47heIbxI/AAAAAAAAAOY/Hr7Z-SD_hT0/s1600/DIY_knit_kitty_blanket_2.jpg ) and a breastfeeding hat, aka the hooter hat ( http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3lUaWYFyH0E/Tqm1ssCspwI/AAAAAAAAASQ/Vph9jxKL9kU/s1600/DIY_boob_hat_with_nipple.png )

I crochet, but I'm really only good at straight lines. I can make blankets and scarves like it's nobody's business, but that's the extent of my repertoire.

Right now I'm working on a stuffed elephant that resembles a balloon animal, not a REAL elephant ( http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/L0210.html?noImages= ). You have to register at that site to see the pattern (and pictures) but they have TONS of free patterns at that site so its totally worth it.

@Navy_mommy: that is awesome! i'm totally gonna go check that site out!

@twist - its funny you say that, I considered learning how to crochet for that reason but I've found more than enough knitting patterns that I LOVE to keep me busy!
After I finish the elephant I'm thinking I'll start a little teddy bear sweater! ( http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/60668AD.html ) or a frog hat, lol ( http://withatangledskein.blogspot.com/2010/01/newborn-froggie-hat.html?m=1 )

The two projects I've completed are actually patterns I found on blogs then altered slightly. I have instructions on my blog (link in profile) that you can find on the DIYs for baby tab!

i knit! just finished my first non-rectangular project - a swirl hat! i need to fix the top of the hat though because it's not looking like i think it should look (like the way the hat turned out, but the top has a hole). =T i've done scarves and blankets but that's pretty much it.

@Navy_mommy: ok I lied. Clearly you've expanded my vision of knitting. I would TOTALLY make a little elephant like that for a baby. ::steps out of box::

@twist - hahahaha, I have like a billion bookmarks of cutsie knitting projects for the baby.

I would love to knit but #1 - I don't know how and #2 I don't know if I would have the time. My mom knits slippers (thats the only thing she knows how to do) but one day I will try.
Your hat is adorable! lol

I just recently started to crochet-- I learned via youtube! I've made a few little animals so far and am working on an afghan.
I can't wait to have a baby to crochet for : )

@navy_mommy - don't have a picture uploaded, but here's the pattern:
http://sheepytimeknits.com/knit/Patterns/swirlhat.pdf
did it in deep red.
also, copying your cat blanket, i wanted to make this bunny blanket: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/50722.html
do you think you can help me start it? i don't understand the first 2 steps in the instructions lol. when i cast on stitches, the first cast on creates 2 stitches - so i think i can look up how to create just 1 stitch, but i'm not sure what i have to do for rows 1-6. what does that mean - knit into front and back of first stitch? and how does it become 7 at the end of row 6? does that mean the first one is the cast on. row 1 = 2 stitches. row 2 = 3 stitches? to kind of create a triangle? plus, how come it doesn't mention any yarn over? so confused! any help is MUCH appreciated!

I've been knitting for 5 years. I've made countless hats, cowls, baby sweaters, baby blankets, afghans, and shawls. Navy Mommy, you should really go on Ravelry.com It's a knitting community with tons of free patterns and other resources.

I crochet, but I haven't done it for a while, I tried knitting but because I learnt to crochet first, I never really got the hang of knitting and I must prefect crochet.

@Mrsbells: that's exactly why i haven't started to crochet. It's like my brain is saying "one needle... can't compute".

I learned how to knit/crochet from my grandmother. I love it and wish I had more time for it. MIL also crochets often. I need to make time for it!

I knit! I made this blanket (http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall08/PATTopart.html) when I was pregnant with my daughter (in black and white). I'm going to try to get my mom to teach me to crochet during this pregnancy because there is a sock monkey blanket pattern I have that is super cute, but it's crochet, not knit.

The timing of this thread is so funny b/c I just pulled out my knitting needles for the first time in years last night. I'm starting by making some really simple baby booties:
http://bundlesoflove.org/EasyKnittedBooties
Next I'm going to try to graduate onto some more difficult ones. I think knitting for baby is really good for learning new knitting skills, since the projects are small and quick to complete, so you can try lots of new things without too much time commitment.

i've crocheted before, but it's not like knitting (where it's more like riding a bike after not doing it awhile).... i'll have to watch some videos to remember how to crochet again.

I've been teaching myself to crochet off of youtube videos. lol. I made a cute little striped blanket so far. I found a pattern for a crocheted owl that I really want to try!

I knit and crochet!
I actually started a business crocheting hats and other items to sell, and now I'm writing and publishing patterns. ( I guess you could say I'm a little obsessive sometimes)
I've made A LOT of things, but I think my favorite crochet project is the Muno I made for my Yo Gabba Gabba fanatic daughter. My favorite knitting project so far is the 'Pixie Poncho' by Spud and Chloe (also for my daughter), but I still need to block and sew it up! (and it just snowed the other day... We might be passed 'poncho' weather... )

@tequiero21 - I have no idea how to start that pattern, lol. If you're still having trouble, the body of what you're making looks a lot like the body of the pattern that I followed (but changed slightly), maybe these instructions will be easier?
http://www.greasy.com/nittineedles/kitty_kuddles_free_pattern.html
Hahaha, and looking at that site again, they started with the pattern you're working on, and didn't like it, so they made this instead!
nectarine / 2458 posts
@skibobrown - I completely agree! Baby projects are the best because they're small so you don't drive yourself bonkers trying to make them while you're still learning!
The elephant I'm working on right now feels like it's going SO slow compared to the other two projects I completed because its basically a 3 foot long tube that you shape into an elephant. 3 feet (of tightly knit work since it'll be stuffed) is taking SO much longer than a baby beanie and a mini lovey-blanket! hahaha I can't imagine trying to knit anything for an adult!

@OlivePink - if I can improve my knitting (particularly using a consistent gauge) I hope to sell some stuff. Especially my boob hat, just because I find it hilarious, lol. I also might eventually try knitting wool cloth diaper covers so between hats and diaper covers I think I would have a good start to an Etsy shop!

@navy_mommy - surprisingly, i figured out how to do it until the paws.... is there a video you used to cast on additional stitches for the hands? and did you have to cast on in the beginning of the row and at the end of the row? so confusing! can't seem to find any videos that will help me with that.
nectarine / 2458 posts
@tequiero21 - I did my hands slightly differently than the pattern called for - mine aren't knots, mine are just there. This is what I wrote about it in my blog:
"The lower half of the body I did exactly as the pattern instructed, but I did the hands completely differently. Instead of adding a shit-ton (aka 20 more) stitches, I added 4 on either side (so 8 in total). I still did the same number of rows as the pattern call for (4 in all) but instead of having to tie knots in the ends, mine are just kinda there. And I like it that way."
What I did was cast on 4 additional stitches on either side of the body...so, say my "row one" is the first "hand" row:
Row 1 - cast on 4 additional stictches at the beginning of the row (there are a bunch of good instructions on how to do this if you google it) and knit to the end of the row - the "new" stitches will be the last ones you work on row 2 since you cast them on at the begining
Row 2 - same as row one. Now you'll have 8 additional stitches; 4 on each side since you added them over the course of 2 rows
Row 3 - knit the whole row
Row 4 - knit the whole row
Row 5 - bind off 4 stitches, then knit to the end of the row
Row 6 - same as row 5. Again, since you did this at the beginning of 2 separate rows the piece will still be symmetrical.
Then finish the pattern.
I hope that helps; it is quite possible it makes no sense at all, lol

thanks, navy_mommy - i think the row 1 and 2 were key. i had to cast 1 arm, then knit, then turn it around and then cast the other arm. i was stuck there. but i'm making progress! thanks for your help!

@Navy_Mommy: look what i found! thought about you when i found it since you're making an elephant.

If you're into elephants there's Franklin Habit's Flo the Elephant pattern: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEff10/FEATff10SIT.php I've had it queued for some time.

@tequiero21: That is too cute! I think I'd be afraid to try it though, lol, the pattern is intense!

@Navy_Mommy: lol i know! i'm still stuck on the first step. gotta youtube it! like.... what the heck is A? who knows.
apricot / 307 posts
@tequiero21: A is your main color as in the grey color for the body of the elephant. I've never heard of the thumb method, but it sounds like another long-tail cast on. I stopped doing long tail cast on because I hate it so much. I usually do a cable cast on in general.
