I refuse to pay for patterns, so usually use ravelry or lionbrand for their freebies. Or pinterest. Or Attic 24 http://attic24.typepad.com/ or the patchwork heart http://thepatchworkheartuk.blogspot.co.uk/

I use Pinterest quite a bit to search for new, free patterns!

Raverly is awesome! Not every pattern is free, but TONS are and you can set the search parameters to only show you free ones. They also have forums to help you out, learn new techniques, shop yarns and just show off your work.
