My husband and I went to go buy flowers today for our front yard. I was under the impression that he knew what he was doing, and he that I knew. But neither of us know, lol! Luckily all the flowers have instructions and information written on them so I think we picked good stuff.... guess we'll find out!

We have zero gardening experience. I've tried having plants here and there through the years but they all die. I do have and orchid plant that was a gift from when LO was born 8 months ago and is still going strong. It's in its second bloom which is a first for me. We planted some bulbs in the front yard during the fall, have not seen anything come up yet.

We're learning as we go and it's a hit or miss sometimes but I blame it on our soil! It's SO dense and clay-ey. But my MIL is a GREAT resource. She's an AMAZING gardener, the garden at their old house puts those in Better Homes and Gardens to shame.

@regberadaisy: My mom knows what she's doing too, and actually offered to come with us and help but since we both figured somebody knew what they were doing, we stupidly said no.

My mom is a pretty good gardener and I hoped that skill passed onto me. Sadly, it didn't. I cannot keep anything alive for more than a couple weeks.

I learned from my dad. The first thing you should do if you plant in an area for the first time is test the soil. Then you need to know if you the shade and sun patters. There are some great magazines out there too, esp. the ones from the seed companies.

When I doubt, YouTube! I have watched endless gardening how to videos and have learned tons! The most important thing, IMO is knowing what will grow in your region (climate) and knowing how much sun or wind your growing spot gets.
Last year we planted our veggie patch in our backyard, facing east. It seemed really sunny and ideal, but in the height of summer, it was nowhere near as much sun as the southend (much smaller area and not as convenient). Everything grew, but we would have had much better success if we just planted everything in the southend of the house.

Oh and bonemeal is your friend! It helps with flowering.

We know now
We learned through the last couple years... and I think we're honing in our gardening skills. I'd have to admit that DH is more of a natural gardener than I am and knew a lot more when we first started at our house!I can't wait for flower day at the local outdoor market!
