Interested to see what people's definition of "millionaire" is. Someone that has 1 mil in savings? Someone who makes 1 mil a year? Someone who has collectively 1 mil in assets/investments?

@winniebee: I guess my definition was of someone who had "millions", in other words, there is no question about their status because during an IPO they made 50 million or they inherited a well-known family fortune. I wasn't counting any inbetweeners who maybe almost kinda made it

Yes, and you would never know it being in the midwest, most of them don't flaunt it and are farmers.

No one in my personal life. But I'm sure some of the farmers I know from work are millionaires.

@winniebee: that's a good point. I define a millionaire as someone that has at least $1mil in net worth, including property and investments. A million dollar a year salary alone (to me) wouldn't make me think of millionaires.

@looch: i would imagine with a million in salary per year has a lot more than a million in total assets! There are very few jobs that actually pay that much... Even most CEOs don't earn that!

@sunny: Well, CEO compensation is tied largely to performance and they usually recieve restricted shares (if they are publically traded companies).

This article claims that the median income for millionaires is only $131,000, and they've just been frugal and very wise with investments.

I know a few, most make a decent salary and spend wisely and invest smartly, well some I'm just assuming because I know their salary and lifestyle. I do know some that have gotten themselves in lucrative businesses that have been bought off, theyre doing quite well

I'm pretty sure some people I know have millions in assets, but I guess I consider a true millionaire as someone who has millions in liquid cash, OR makes at least 1 million per year?

@sunny: Sorry after I wrote that I realized I was wrong, I meant multi millionaires.. I used to prepare tax returns for some high wealth individuals.. so I "know" them as in I've had professional dealings..

@winniebee: I was thinking $1 million in assets, which isn't that hard... as for making over $1 million a year.. I have had professional dealings with quite a few... but you run into it in my line of business..

No...not personally anyway. I'm sure I've met a few at/through work, but I've never asked LOL
