I watch a soap opera every day and I'm pretty sure nobody on it has ever made it to the hospital to give birth. They're either somewhere in the middle of nowhere in the car, in an elevator, by the lake, etc. Has this happened to anybody in real life?

Nobody that I know. But I remember an episode of Family Ties when Elise Keaton went into labor while performing a song on TV and they ended up delivering in the ambulance I think. Never heard of it happened in real life tho.

No one I know, but my clinic tells me all the stories about the women who give birth on I95 (on the way to the hospital) because they underestimate the traffic in this area.

No one I know....though a friend's wife delivered less than TWENTY MINUTES after the time stamp on her hospital parking ticket. Literally. Her doc kept telling her to wait until her contractions were 5 mins apart and it never got that way, so finally she just went. It was her first!

My cousin helped deliver his neighbor's TWINs on their living room floor!

No one I know, either, but MIL gave birth to the hubs while FIL was parking the car! He dropped her off, got her in the wheelchair, went out to park, and then missed the birth! So it was a pretty close call.

@winniebee: that happened to my mom! she walked in at 6:00pm, and I was born 6:14pm. it was her first as well so she was totally confused (and nervous at 18!)

I was kind of worried about this too, until doc and SIL both insisted with your first, mostly, you'd have enough time to walk to the hospital things go so slow.
My friend is 25 weeks in with her fourth and her third was a two hour labour so midwives have warned her not to delay at all, the minute she feels anything happening, straight to the hospital. -
This is a true story: My Grandmother gave birth to my aunt in the back seat of a VW. My Grandfather pulled the car over, delivered her, then hopped back in the drivers seat and drove the rest of the way to the hospital. My Grandma and my aunt LOVE to tell this story. My aunt was child number 4 so I guess they kinda new what they were doing by then...

My friend slept through her labor (her contractions didn't get painful until she went into transition) so by the time she got to the hospital, she was pushing as she was climbing out of the car. The baby was born less than 5 mins later!

@pastemoo: hehe yeah, that was her first. With her second she called when her contractions started... the doc told her to wait at home, but she insisted on going straight to the hospital, and sure enough the baby was born in an hour!

My aunt delivered her second child under the kitchen table. I'm not sure how she got under there! Her oldest was three at the time and the only one home. She called an ambulance because she knew she wasn't going to make the 45 minute drive to the nearest hospital. They didn't arrive in time though! He was perfectly healthy.

I worked with a guy whose wife gave birth on the gurney while being rushed into the hospital! She had tried to stick it out too long at home when she went into labor, and by the time he insisted she go in she was halfway done! Baby was perfectly fine!

I dont know her personally, but this lady was in the news a couple of weeks ago, she was on her way to the hospital and gave birth on the side of the road!

We have had 2 women in Sydney give birth at the side of the road on the way to hospital in the last 2 weeks! I think it's every woman's worst nightmare!
A friend of mine gave birth about 20 mins after arriving at the hospital.

In Nashville we had terrible floods in may of 2010. There was a lady who went into labor while she was trapped in her home by high water. She ended up delivering the baby in a Canoe while they were trying to rescue her!

A girl I work with had to stop at a firestation and give birth because she couldn't make it to the hospital. The fire fighters still give her son a birthday card - HAHA!

My ex's mom gave birth to him in the back of a cab on the way to the hospital. They were driving past an airport and she could tell she wouldn't be able to make it so she had the cab pull into the airport and she gave birth right there. There was an article in the newspaper about it.
I also saw an episode of A Baby Story where a woman was pregnant with twins, went into intense labor, called 911, and gave birth to baby #1 before the paramedics even got to her house. She was wearing sweatpants and didn't even have time to take them off before the baby came out, and she was still on the phone with 911. It was awesome. They got her to the hospital before baby #2 came.

with DD #2, I came pretty close... in a nutshell:
6p - left for the hospital. contractions were strong and more frequent, but I was still in a pretty normal mood in between. however, felt a few urges to push, so left to get checked just in case
6:20p - arrive at hospital. refused wheelchair and walked to L&D
6:30p - arrive at L&D. front desk tells me to wait.
6:45p - after making a bit of a fuss, I get checked by a Dr - 9cm!!! get rushed to a delivery room
almost 7p - Dr says I'm complete and ready to push
7:02p - my baby was born

All of these stories make me glad to have gone to the hospital early! My mom gave birth to my sister 20 minutes after she got to the hospital, so I was pretty freaked out. Especially because I wanted an epidural. So when my contractions came close together fast, I went. And of course they sent me home because they weren't strong enough, and of course I freaked out. But luckily they admitted me an hour later.

I just read a story about a woman giving birth in a car due to traffic! It was SO nuts. She didn't even have time to take off her pants so the baby was "caught" in her sweatpants.
I'm so nervous about #2 coming fast, my mom said to get my butt to the hospital as soon as I start feeling anything. I think from start (first contraction) to finish I only took 5 hours to deliver! -
There was a news story recently about a woman who delivered in a plane mid flight. I know it does happen to people, but not as often as the movies and tv shows make it seem.

My mom almost didn't make it for her first. My older sister was born within about 5 minutes of her getting to the hospital. Her water broke, she went straight into transition, and she was born in under an hour.
So when her water broke with me and the contractions were immediately horrible, she raced to the hospital. I was born in about an hour and a half after her water broke.

A girl I went to HS with delivered in her living room with her mom's help. It was a snow storm and she lives in a very rural area, the ambulance couldn't get to her house, neither could her husband. They were snowed in for a couple hours until a plow came to get them out and to the hospital!

Oh wow... I better not let my husband read this thread. We live an hour + from the hospital and he's really freaking out about getting there in time. Maybe I should have him watch some youtube birth videos so he can study up, lol.
