As most of you know, I'm in the middle of gender disappointment after finding out our second is another boy. My OB made a comment in passing that they are wrong about 5% of the time. I need to see how not true that is. 
Did you or anyone you know have a gender scan that was wrong?

Yes. I do know someone who had a baby last year. She was told all along it would be a girl...and then she had a boy. I know someone else who had the same thing happen but it was a few years ago so technology maybe wasn't as great.
I think when they are wrong it's typically they say girl and it ends up boy. At least that's what I've heard.

Mine was. We were told girl and later found out boy. I believe @lilyann: had the same experience.
Most often it occurs with boy being a girl and with early scans (mine actually was at 17 weeks, but my bladder was really full and they think that was the culprit). Unless your doctor expressed uncertainty about the sex or you didn't get a good shot, I would assume it was correct.

I'm sorry about the gender disappointment. I think it is a lot more common to say girl and have it be a boy. I guess the boy part could be the cord between the legs, but usually once you see a penis it doesn't go away.

@skipra: I know, as soon as is said it I was annoyed because it put the idea in my head. I guess the point of this thread is to see how it doesn't happen often and when it does its girl ends up being a boy.

@ladybee: no experience but just wanted to send over a hug. I went through this too when I found out #2 was a boy but really ended up so in love with my second little guy. It is ok to mourn the girl dream.

@ladybee: DH had the same thoughts when we found out our second was a boy. It was a little early and the tech was wrong about something else which we found out a few weeks later so he would not let me tell anyone it was a boy because of that small little chance it wasn't.

@Mrs. Confetti: thank you. I've been googling being a mom of all boys and have found blog posts helpful. I know once he's here I'll love him and it will be great. It's just the initial disappointment is still here.

@ladybee: I just wanted to tell you that as a mom of two boys, it has been amazing! I'm sure it's difficult now, but the brother dynamic has been fun to watch.

@Boogs: the pain lessons each day. We found out Monday and for the first few days I truly felt like someone had died. DH has now said we can have three if I want which was never an option and while I doubt we will it's helping me get excited for brothers.

T's cousin's wife was told that it was a girl at 15 weeks. At 19 weeks, she was in a car accident and they did an ultrasound to check on the baby. Turns out it was a boy. He's two now. But that's the only one I know of.

I just heard that a friend of a friend had a DNA test that said boy, but their 20 week ultrasound said girl. I'm not sure the details, but sounds fishy to me. I hope she gets her girl in 20 weeks! (just because I hear the DNA tests are more accurate!)

I know someone who was told girl, but they had a boy. They were told girl at their 14 week and 20 week scans!!

No, I think this is pretty rare these days.... Especially if they already saw boy parts. I would try to start accepting this (and not hold out hope for a 5% mistake) and try to get excited for brothers too!!! We are having two boys and I think it's just going to be the best!

I have a friend who was initially told it was a girl (which her husband refused to believe), but ended up needing extra ultrasounds due to low fluid and they all confirmed it was a boy. She ended up having a boy.

@mrsjyw: when we got boy results on the DNA test my OB said it's basically impossible for that to be wrong. For them to say boy it means they found a Y chromosome, which the mother certainly doesn't have.

My husband has a cousin who was told she was having a boy and actually delivered a girl who is now four years old. I think in her case the ultrasound machine they were using was old so maybe they didn't see everything correctly.

I've heard stories of friends of friends of friends but don't know anyone personally. I think it wa more common in the 80s etc, when technology wasn't good. If they see boy parts at 20 weeks, it's pretty certainly a boy.

Friend of friend, and it was a girl who turned out to be a boy. I have never heard of a boy who turned out to be a girl.

I know someone that had a girl, but was told it was a boy. Very different situation though, because she was a triplet, and so everything was super squished.

I girl I grew up with was supposed to be a boy according to her ultrasound. Granted it was 30 years ago, but it does happen.

I have a friend that was told girl at a 16 week ultrasound, baby would not show the goods at the anatomy scan at 20 or 21 weeks. They were told boy at a 36 week growth ultrasound and delivered a boy (who went home to a pretty pink nursery).

A childhood friend was told at her anatomy scan that her baby was a girl, and it was actually a boy. She didn't have any ultrasounds between her anatomy scan and when he was born.

@ladybee: I do know someone personally who was told boy at 12 week ultrasound and at 20 weeks found out it was a girl. Boy and girl parts look alike at 12 weeks, so your technician really needs to know their stuff to tell the difference. I have two boys and went through gender disappointment withy he first. With the second, I felt like I was fine either way. Even though I wanted a girl for me, I knew my oldest would love to have a brother. It has been great seeing the two of them grow together.

@ladybee: I don't know anyone who had this happen. I had a friend who was convinced she had a girl even though everything said boy, it was a boy and she is still disappointed. I think it would have been easier if she had accepted the fact she was having a boy earlier.

No. I found out I was having a girl at 16w and it was really obvious. I would think by 18w if they're seeing boy parts then it's a boy.

@mrsjyw: @Truth Bombs: I also had a friend who was told boy after the DNA test and ended up having a girl (which they discovered during a later ultrasound). She'd gone through IVF, and they said what likely happened was the DNA test picked up a Y chromosome from a twin that was lost.
