I was a complicated pregnancy and birth. This was 1975, so my mom never had any ultrasounds or anything, but she bled throughout her pregnancy and they somehow figured out that she had placenta previa (when the placenta covers the opening to the cervix). So she knew fairly early that she'd need a c-section.

Even worse, she developed preeclampsia which turned into eclampsia, and of course the only cure for eclampsia is to give birth. It got bad enough that they did a C-section when my mom was 36.5 weeks.

I was a very low birth weight (3.5 lbs.) and ended up having to stay in the hospital for almost five weeks until I was healthy enough to take home. Luckily, there was nothing seriously wrong with me - I never needed oxygen or anything like that. But they wanted to keep me there for quite a while until I developed further.

Everything turned out fine (obviously, since I'm here typing this now).
