I have a 15 month old, and 4 year old. With my first I didn’t think twice about this, but with my baby I am constantly paranoid and texting to make sure they made it home safe (if they go to the park). She drives him in my car. Lately I am wondering if I should just have her keep him home. She tends to prefer to walk him to the park - but the walk is far, and in LA I also worry about pedestrian accidents as well as now the summer heat.

Yes, I do. She has to -- older kids are in activities and such and I need her to run errands!

Yep, I do! And she also takes them on Chicago city buses. She keeps the kids busy and gets them out in the city, and trusting her with transportation is key to that. I think she and the kids would go a bit stir-crazy if they were restricted to activities only within walking distance of our place, but we admittedly do not live in the best neighborhood.

Yep, my son is 2y3m and would drive her crazy or get bored if they didn't go to the park or something. I bought a family zoo pass and put her on it so they can go to the zoo whenever they want also.
She does ask me if it's ok if it is a longer/further trip. Like when she takes him to the trout hatchery south of town, it's a 40 minute drive each way, they make a day of it and he loves it.
I had a lot of anxiety about cars with my son when he was 5-12 months old, I don't know why it manifested then, but between zoloft when the anxiety was really bad and passing time I'm not so worried anymore.

@Sams Mom: yes - I definitely ride the line if needing some sort of med. my anxiety doesn’t inhibit my daily function, but I often toy with the idea of trying medication.

@oskarsmommy: mine doesn't impede day to day function; but the keeping the extras that I wouldn't be worrying about if I didn't have anxiety at bay is what the Zoloft is for. I'm on 50 mg, it hasn't effected me poorly in any way. I even sleep a little better for it.

@oskarsmommy: I was off of it for almost a year, but then when TTC #2 started taking way too long and obsessing over the what if I never get pregnant again, why do I not get to make this choice for myself, all the testing temping and tracking got to me... So I'm back on it.

Will your auto insurance cover her? If she runs someone over or injures someone (I don’t mean your son, perhaps a pedestrian) what would happen? I only ask bc my SILs au pair did this at her second family. They pedestrian ended up suing the family.
I’d just talk to your insurance to see what is covered and what isn’t. -
@Littlebit7: FYI- even if the nanny was driving her own car the nanny family could still be sued under tertiary liability. Not saying the claimant would win, but the reason the nanny was behind the wheel was because she was working on their behalf.

Mine drove all over town with my kids. She was probably a more responsible driver than me, frankly. We just made sure we had very thorough lessons on the car seats and put her on our insurance.

I do not have a nanny so this doesn't really pertain to me. However, I work in auto claims and I am PARANOID about my kids riding with anyone else ever... even my inlaws!! It's kind of a hindrance. I am already panicking about school and I want to change our schedules so DD won't have to ride the bus so we can take her and pick her up.. and I'm really worried about "car pools" in the future. I don't want to look like a weirdo or be the only mom who doesn't participate but... I've just seen too many things and I don't 'know if I can over come it.
I would not let a nanny drive my kids anywhere.

@oskarsmommy: I used to have terrible anxiety with my second about any member of my immediate family dying in horrific ways. I was obsessive about car seats and leaving the kids in the car on accident. Once I started therapy and went on Lexapro, those thoughts have calmed themselves, and I'm glad for it. It doesn't hurt to get evaluated for PPA.
