I'm visiting an area right now that is in a gated community and it seems as though they are everywhere! Like, it's the norm here. I've never been in a gated community before in my life until now.
Do you live in one?

We live in a large subdivision but it's not actually gated. My old apartment complex was gated... but that's because it was close to the projects : )

Nope but I seem to remember when I visited Florida, I thought the same thing! My parents live in a gated community and I LOVE it! I wish we lived in one!!

No and I don't think there are very many around here. They seem to be more popular in the Dallas area where my parents used to live.

No, but there are no gated communities in my area. When I lived in Florida, it seemed like everything was a gated community so I did live in one then.

Ours has a gate where you put in a code and let yourself in, but it's only closed at night. I wouldn't really call it a gated community, more of just a community that happens to have a gate lol.
ETA: gated communities are very popular in the city I live in though.

I think it is very popular in FL! My MIL lives down there and is in a gated community. I grew up in a gated community in Hawaii but it is not so much the norm there.

We live in one. It's kind of weird, but we love the townhouse that we're renting... so the fact that it's gated is not really an issue. Some of the complexes right near us are pretty sketchy too, so I'm sort of glad that we have the extra security of the gate. Not that someone couldn't get in if they really wanted to...

Yay for being in Florida!
I lived in a gated apartment complex in college, but the gate was always broken. I'm not a fan of gated communities, so much hassle just to visit someone.

We live in a large community that has a club, etc but it is not gated & the public is allowed to use the amenities for a steeper fee. I like that it's open & inviting but I can see the advantages of a gate. Friends of ours in Florida live in a gated community.

We live in a gated community. At first I was not a fan however now I love it and definitely feel safer. Our last non gated community home, we were robbed inbroad daylight! Luckily no one was home at the time.

I agree that gated communities are much more the norm in FL. I grew up in TN and there weren't any, even in the very affluent parts of town.
We live in an apartment building that has a gated parking lot and swipe cards to get in the front door, so my answer is technically yes, but when I think of a "gated community" I think of large homes, a pool, etc., so I don't really think of our building as one.

In our area they are not common, even in the very wealthy areas there aren't gated communities.

Kind of! One end is gated, the other is open. (weird).

We don't live in a gated community. We did live in a gated apartment complex. But I didn't see the point because cars would just wait for someone to open the gate and then drive through. So if someone was going to do something bad the gate wouldn't have stopped them.

There aren't any in my city, and very few in my province. I know one person who lived in a gated community, and their HOA were a bunch of insane and obsessed people, so I have a negative view of them in general and would never live in one.

@chopsuey119: our townhouse was like that. I never got why.

@artbee: I think it's to prevent random people from driving through...?
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
@chopsuey119: guess that makes sense. Our gate was on a small road, but the side that isn't gated is a really busy road. I feel like it should be the other way around.

Nope. Used to date a guy who lived nearby and hedid and I had to talk to a guard everytime I entered!

Sort of? We live in a condo complex, and while the community itself is not gated (driveways are all open), you need an electronic key to get into all the buildings and garages. Keeps us from having any unexpected visitors because people have to call us or use the dial-in (which calls my cell phone) to get in!
