We currently live in a pretty walkable neighborhood. We may move to a more remote location at some point, and my only real concern is whether or not the countryside would allow the family to walk as much. I'm guessing that in some ways will walk more, but in other ways will probably have to have a car and drive around more too. Not sure how it will net out!
Do you live in a walkable community? Do you guys walk a lot with the fam?

It's fairly walkable. There are restaurants and shopping, plus entertainment and playgrounds all within a 15-20 minute walk. We don't walk a lot though because we commute 30 minutes by car for work.

I live in a suburban neighborhood with lots of sidewalks for running/walking, but I'm not within walking distance of any stores or restaurants.

Yes and no. We have sidewalks and street lamps in out neighborhood and nearby streets. I live in a college town, which makes it easy to walk to stores and restaurants. I like to bike to Main Street, but walking there with LO would be too much work. So while I can walk to most places nearby, it is easier to travel by car with LO.

Yup, we walk a lot. We can walk to school, parks, playgrounds, library, stores, restaurants, the beach, etc. All the basics.

We live about a block from the ocean, and the surrounding area is pretty walkable. There's the beach, a park, the local library, farmer's market, and a few decent restaurants and cafes/coffee shops that are within walking distance.
However, we still need to drive to our chosen markets, shopping, and some of our go-to restaurants, though.

We live in the suburbs but it's very walkable. There is a grocery store, liquor store, 2 drug stores, 2 sit down restaurants and 3-4 fast food type places all within 15 mins walking. There is also a playground and some trails very close. We are extremely lucky!!!!

Not really--I live close enough to downtown that I can walk to restaurants (though it's a little far), but there are no grocery stores within walking distance, and my work is too far away for walking. However, we do have a really great bus system and we use that to get to work, and we can walk to the library.
I loved the previous town we lived in partly because it was so walkable. I had a 10 minute walk to work and could stop by two grocery stores, the farmer's market, and the library on my way home! Plus we lived across the street from a park. We were renting though, and I doubt we'd be able to afford to buy a house so close to downtown if we ever moved back there.

Where we are now, definitely not.
We are moving on Monday, and our new place is VERY walkable. Maybe a 5-minute walk from downtown? They just built a new major shopping center with restaurants, as well as a new grocery store. My hope is to use the car only rarely. The neighborhood itself is also very nice for just taking walks, so I'm excited for that! DH and I used to love taking a nice long walk after dinner, but fell out of the habit since moving to this place because there aren't any nice places to walk around. Looking forward to getting back into the habit!

We live in a very walkable suburb, within a half mile there are two nice grocery stores (and some liquor/deli places) several decent restaurants, dry cleaners, retail places, a park etc. Changing the radius to a mile or so you add in three more parks all on the water front, a movie theater, library, more restaurants etc. Our community draws lots of young families as well as people who don't drive because it is totally possible top live day to day life here without a car. One issue is public transportation, being near "the motor city" we have awful public transit.

Our community isn't very walkable, in terms of amenities so we drive to get groceries, restaurants, etc. We do have really nice trails and the beach so we walk a lot on those for fun/exercise.

We live near Trader Joe's, three parks, golf course (access to the beach), library, another local health food store, Safeway, a Mexican restaurant, froyo, schools, Walgreens, subway and taco del mar.

Yeah...lots of people walk around here, and there's a little convenience store up the road to walk to once in a while.

Where we live isn't very walkable in that you can't get to any particular "place" very easily for the most part. But our family does a ton of walking and spending time outside. It's a perk that we have miles of terrain right at home that belong to us and that we can explore on. Often we just walk around the yard from place to place (over to the barns, over to the sandbox, by the bins, in the CRP, to where the bees are), and I bet we put in a few miles just doing that. Which is good since that's about my only exercise at the moment!

its walking distance to downtown, and we go there a lot. But we drive, its crazy hot and walking that far gives me migraines. A lot of the time my parents take lo and used to take our pup and walk with them and dh and I meet them there.

Yes. Although my neighborhood doesn't have as many commercial options as some other BK neighborhoods, like Park Slope. But by virtue of being in NYC, it's very walkable.

Nope, not at all! Aside from not having any stores/restaurants/businesses nearby it's too dang hot to be out for very long!

Yes, our suburban neighborhood is pretty walkable. We have a drugstore, A grocery store, and several restaurants in walking distance from our house.

oh yeah, not walkable at all, in terms of going places. it's a suburb off the highway surrounded by trees and a river (not accessible).
our score is 13, but the places listed that are remotely walkable are not real places.... example: there's a 'school' listed 1 km away, but it's just a tiny boarded up building that used to be a school in the 1800's 
haha...
there's not even a park anywhere, and nowhere i could spend money (gas station, grocery store, cafe, shop etc) -- which is not a bad thing! we walk and look at houses mostly, or drive to the more urban areas! it's nice and quiet here, but i would love to live in a more walkable area in the future. maybe....

Yes! It is a very big reason why we moved where we did. The park is a bit far round-trip, so sometimes we drive there. But when it is nice, we walk everywhere!

Yes, it's why we chose our current place. Taxis are a pain to get here in Beijing and we only use a car and driver on certain days, so it's nice to have everything within waking distance of where we live.

I think we have a 98 walk score. We bought a car in October and have less than 1500 km on it! I don't drive, so it's great.

I would say yes. I can walk to the town centre, shopping, supermarket, restaurants, etc. The UK in general is pretty walking friendly, I think.

this is sort of a requirement for me--I have a driver's license but I hate driving, and haven't actually in years and years! Like, twice in the past 8 years or something, haha, and that was only because dh and I co-owned a car and he made me drive it a couple times 
we don't have a car now though, and this is something I really worry about in the future--we don't have much control over where we'll be living eventually, and I probably will need to drive

Moved from a very walkable apartment away from main roads with sidewalks and trails in the woods to a walkable home neighborhood away from main roads and nearby trails in the woods.

And ours is fairly walkable, but mostly hills, so I prefer not to. Haha. But my parents are 3 miles away, library 2 miles away (but up a seriously huge hill), 2 elem schools within a couple miles, stop and shop is a block away but who wants to walk with a ton of bags of groceries?
Dunkin, some restaurants, McDonald's, del's and liquor stores all on the other side of our block. (It's a huge block).

@nana87: Ditto! I actually have a slight fear of driving. I love walking and having everything at my fingertips. DH has become more of a city person since we've been together and living in the suburbs would increase our commutes in a way that he wouldn't like. We'll see what happens in the future.
