I live in a neighborhood within a medium sized city. Lately cars have been entered in our area almost every night. Sometimes things are just rifled around, sometimes small items like change are taken, and sometimes larger or more expensive items. In every single case the cars have been left unlocked overnight. We went through a similar period in early fall. I'm shocked that so many people leave their cars unlocked, especially when we have recently had a string of incidents. I also feel that the high number of unlocked vehicles is what continues to attract thieves. I always lock my car during the day and overnight, no matter where I am. To me, there's just no reason not to since it takes less than a second. What's your policy?

Well we have an underground gated parking garage so if I have my hands full with DD and other things, I dont worry about it. But on the street in public? Always.

I always lock the car doors unless the car is on our own garage!

I voted sometimes, the exception is if we are in our own garage. And it's an odd exception but if I absolutely have to get gas in a dicey neighborhood I leave my car unlocked because otherwise they just smash your window in which means you are out whatever they take plus the cost of a window.

I dont drive anymore but when i did, i always always always locked my doors!!
Then again, i am a person with four locks on my apartment door

our carport is open, so i lock it, if we had our own garage that was locked i wouldn't bother locking my car doors

I voted sometimes...because a few years ago my then-partner and I were actively trying to entice someone to steal our car. It was old and broken in many ways, and the insurance payout for having it stolen was so, so, so much more money than any other means of disposing of it.
We lived in a not-so-great neighborhood at the time, but, we were parking the car in an much higher crime neighborhood a couple of blocks away. We even left the keys in the car (in plain sight!) for weeks.
It didn't work. Someone stole the broken, AM-only radio out of it, and a scrabble game, but not the car itself. We eventually sold the car to a scrap yard.
With a car that I'm not hoping someone will steal, I always, always lock it.

Yep, always! We live in a safe neighborhood but it's a great habit to be in.

I lock them when we are out & about but not at home. We live in a small country town about 5 minutes from town down a secluded road. The road dead ends & turns into a driveway for 5 houses that house us & my in-laws. Everyone here assumes you have a gun & with family around there are plenty of eyes. DH used to leave his keys in the ignition (MIL still does) but now he takes them & locks his doors. Not sure why.

Not when it is closed in the garage, or sometimes if I have it parked in the driveway during the day and I'm in and out of it a lot (like I'll leave it in the driveway to run in and do something and I'll be back out in an hour). But if I leave it for hours, or overnight, or on the street, or anywhere in public-- locked.

I never locked it when we had a private garage. Now that we park in a structure, I do.

We lock car doors all the time. Even in the garage. If I don't stay in the habit of doing it every time we get out of the car, I am likely to leave them unlocked at the wrong moment!

Always! If I parked my car in the garage I wouldn't though.
My FIL lives in a really nice neighborhood at the end of a cul-de-sac and he always used to leave his truck unlocked with the keys on the running board. One day he went out to go to work and the truck was gone! They always lock their doors now too!

always. if i don't, it's because it's in our long, shared driveway, i grabbed something out of it and forgot to lock it when i got back to the keys in the house.

I used to not be that conscious about it; I grew up in a super safe town. But that habit was not good to have when I used to visit DH when we were dating and he lived in a more urban neighborhood and one night my car was broken into (well, not broken into b/c I didn't lock it!!)

Always! I live in a safe part of a city, but the other night my husband saw a man walking down our street trying the handles of every car door to see if they were unlocked. I don't leave anything valuable in the car nor do I leave anything in sight.

If I'm parked in public/street yes I always lock the doors. But I lave my keys in my car in my garage every night.

Always. I do NOT trust our neighbors. Especially since someone very obviously just tried to steal our locked-up generator right out of our backyard.

I don't lock the doors if the car is parked in our garage. And I will often leave the car running when I do daycare drop off since it was cold and I wanted to keep warming the car up.

Yup unless we're parked in our home garage. DH had his radar detector stolen just the other week. He was moving DS into the house in his car seat and forgot to lock his car. Thankfully no broken window, but we just moved into the neighborhood less than 2 weeks. So that sucked.

Not at home but everywhere else I do. I grew up in the country in the middle of no where so it gave me a false sense of safety I think. We live in a city now so I know I probably should lock it but I still don't.
