I used to be less careful about this, but now whenever I'm at home I keep the front door locked.
I doublecheck of course when the kids are home too.
Do you lock your front door if you're home?

We don't lock it until right before bed, we probably should though! We live in a really safe neighborhood right now and I think that we take it for granted too much!

We have it locked all the time. I'm just paranoid like that though. haha. I even double bolt it!

It's always locked, but mostly because I rarely use that door. I do leave my back door unlocked sometimes when I'm home. I'm not too paranoid about it, although I should probably be more careful. I don't have a LO yet, so I suspect I will be more aware when I have a baby in the house.
I've always picked on my grandmother about being so anal about locking her doors (although it is really a good thing that she is!!), if you are at her house and step outside for just a moment, you will be locked out! lol

YES. I am paranoid a stranger is just going to waltz into our apartment, even though we live in a doorman building. I think I watched too many scary movies when I was younger. Even when I was growing up in the middle of nowhere, we always kept all of the doors locked at all times.

I do in this appartment because the door is at the end of the hall where my daughters bedroom is and if the dishwasher or anything is going I don't hear it open or anything.

We generally do, but I'm not as paranoid about it as my hubs. We live on the 3rd floor of a 6 unit controlled access building, so it would be highly unlikely for someone to get to our front door without our knowledge. DH always double checks before we go to bed though.

Yup. We always kept our door locked growing up so its a habit for me. My hubby used to laugh at me and call me paranoid.... Until he was home alone and some random person walked into our apartment thinking it was theirs. She was almost to the kitchen before she realized she was in the wrong apartment. After that he kept the door locked!

I usually do. But today I was lazy and forgot to close the garage door when I got home (we don't usually lock the door from the garage to the house). This thread guilted me into going downstairs to close the garage : )

I used to leave the back door unlocked. And sometimes, I'd forget to lock the car doors (parked in the driveway) but we had our gps stolen from the car recently. Now I lock everything.

We didn't ever lock the door growing up because we lived in a very rural area. Nothing ever happened out there.
When I moved to a more sketchy place - the neighborhood was nice, but we were only two blocks away from a trailer park and there were two incidents while we lived there, so we always kept it locked. And even since we moved and live in a better area, I still lock it cause we live in the heart of a town.

We usually keep the door locked, but we're not OCD about it. I check the doors when we go to bed and occasionally they aren't locked and I'll lock them then. But I prefer to just have them locked at all times.

My front door is always locked because we don't use it. The back door is usually unlocked when we are home.

Yes. Just the front door, though. The back door is usually unlocked unless we are gone or going to bed.
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
Growing up, the door was never locked (even when we weren't home). When I moved to an apartnent, it was always locked (seemed creepy not to). Now that I live in a house again, the door usually just gets locked before bed.

Yes even/especially in a doorman building. I became more paranoid after I heard that story about a mentally ill person who went on a stabbing rampage in his building and just opened people's front doors, finding many unlocked. I also double bolt it because a lot of the staff have access with master keys if they want to get in anyway.

Yep... our garage entrance is what DH and I use on a regular basis, so sometimes we leave the garage open to circulate air and that door is always unlocked, but the main front door is always locked.

We only lock ours at night, or if we're going out. Our small town is insanely trusting...I think we're actually some of the few people who lock our houses at all.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
Yes! I only unlock it if I am expecting someone to come over at any moment...like my parents and I might be upstairs feeding or changing LO.
When I was in college my roommate and I lived in a secured building but someone propped open the door while they were moving stuff. My roommate was in her room printing out something to take to class and I was in my room changing to meet a friend to work out. Since we were just about to leave the door was unlocked. I came out of my room and my roommate was frozen in the hallway looking at a homeless lady that let herself in...I freaked out and screamed and told her to get out. I felt bad bad but I was so scared! She used our bathroom and had to be asked to leave by our apartment manager.

No, not during the day but at night we do. My husband always yells at me for not locking the door during the day.

All of our doors are always locked. I'm super paranoid that someone will get in! I check them several times a day too.
grapefruit / 4400 posts
Nope. We leave our garage open 90% of the time during the weekends, too.
grapefruit / 4823 posts
i do. DH doesn't. i get paranoid. and i definitely will once LO is here
grapefruit / 4554 posts
Our doors are always locked if I'm home alone w/ LO, but when DH is home too we are a little more lax in locking the doors.

Mr. Jacks has always lived in very rural areas, so had previously never locked anything and even left keys in the cars. I've finally convinced him to be more rigorous... We have to keep our doors locked now because there might be a Lala standing behind it and we don't want to hit her with the door. So all doors get locked instantly!

I always lock the door as soon as I close it. It's a habit that has caused me to lock the hubs outside a few times. Now he reminds me not to lock the door when he's doing yard wark.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Yep, I've gotten into the habit of it in this house. If we have the front door open, to let in a breeze, I lock the storm door even though you could easily just slice through the screen at the top of it...
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Most definitely! I didn't realize people didn't with all the frightening stories you hear now days.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
Our front door is always locked, however our sliding glass door to our deck is usually unlocked due to the dog coming in and out. I'm trying to be better about locking it through, since it does freak me out that someone can just walk in when I'm on the couch.
