I have an assitant but I've never managed a team. My old boss told me I would not be a very nice manager because I have extremely high expectations of the people around me. (But I also have extremely high expectations of myself so I don't think that's unfair!)

I haven't managed a team yet, but I'm getting a degree in management and hope to advance to that in another year.

I identify a lot with servant leadership because of where I work. It focuses on supporting your staff with their needs in order to get the most work possible done. I like the focus on not just being productive, but enabling a staff to be productive by supporting them.

I managed a small sales team at my last job. I felt that I was very fair. I was flexible but had high expectations. People get sick, have families, need mental health days, but there was also a job to do. I made sure my staff understood their responsibilities.

I would also suggest reading up on emotional intelligence and active listening.

I think those are the two most important things that my manager lacks.

I used to manage 1 person under me, right now zero (besides an intern). I had a really good boss and I really loved that he was fair & tough on us when needed, but he was also flexible and not anal about stupid things, understanding that everyone has a life outside of work and he is very open to helping us make things work.
