I will check my phone at a light, but it is always in my purse when I'm driving. DH never touches his phone when driving unless answering a call. I try to leave my phone in the purse on the ground so I'm not tempted to check it at all. NEVER do I with LO in the car.

Of frickin course not! I won't even use the phone. Driving is so dangerous.

My phone is in my bag at all times while driving. It wirelessly connects to the stereo via blue tooth, but I rarely employ that feature while in the driver's seat. It is not worth the risk for me.
My husband uses an android phone and he has it set up where the text messages are read outloud, but there's no point to that, because you can't respond. So he keeps that turned off.

I sometimes ask Siri to send D a text message if I'm at a stop-light (always talk-to-text). It's rare, though, and never while the car is in motion, and I never check the internet or anything.

We will occasionally check it at a light, just what's on the main screen not going in and checking emails/FB. I used to actually attempt to text while my vehicle was in motion as a teen, I'm glad nothing happened!

I'll check a text at a light or directions. Sometimes I'll use talk to text to send a message too but it's something like "Picking up milk, see you in 10" not a HB post response! lol!

My DH does and I really wish his car had a handfree setup, at least.
I found out he was texting and I sent this to him.
He has this weird compulsion (OCD related) to clear messages and notifications on his phone. I try not to text him if I know he is driving.
Not the most flattering picture of me but the picture of my dog is hilarious. She looks so serious!
I sent this to my friends and family and my sister used this picture when she thought my other sister was texting while driving. Turns out my other sister was using siri to text.

Hubs and I don't even have texting plans or smart phones, so we'd never do any of this anyway!

@bluestriped bee: @mrs. bird:
I think using Siri counts as distracted driving!

I have used Siri to read me a message by voice commands but I wouldn't ever look at the screen.

@sunny: That is some fancy Siri usage right there!! I had no idea you could use her in that way...
Speaking of Siri, I just found out that you can ask her about that new movie Her with the female AI... she has special answers for you when you do!

@mrbee: Yeah, it is distracted driving.
Now I'm curious how many people use a handsfree device or Siri vs people who don't touch their phones at all.
ETA: I use the Waze app, and sometimes I am distracted by it. I do have a nice Proclip Iphone holder so it is handsfree.

The only thing I use my phone for while driving is GPS and I use the voice navigation.
My DH often uses Google Maps while driving which drives me crazy. I try to help him, hold the phone for him, ect but he insists most of the time on doing it himself.

I used to, but not since I had DS. In fact, I get ragey at other drivers near me when I see them texting or whatever because I'm so afraid they're going to hit us.

Mr. T and I made a promise to one another not to use our phones in any way while driving. So only if we are parked somewhere. He listened to a program on NPR that demonstrated that using your phone while driving was, in many ways, worse than driving drunk! I'll hunt for the study.

@mrbee: We don't have an LO yet unless you're counting the one inside recently pregnant me! I definitely am going to talk to him about that as we get closer to our due date.

@pui: Ah sorry, that's what I meant to say... I'm so excited for your Christmas miracle, and hope that he stops doing that when driving too!!

Occasionally I'll check it at the light, but I don't while driving. I'm too nervous I'll get in an accident. I need to start not checking it at the light too. DH never does. He was hit by a truck while riding his bicycle a few years ago, and is extra cautious driving now

Scary stuff. I am glad that I heard the information from Mr. T and renewed my commitment to not use my phone while driving!

@mrbee: yes, he is, thanks for asking. He broke his hip, which was his main injury, thankfully.

Never, ever. So dangerous. And it pisses me off when I see people do it. I'm so paranoid about driving , especially now that I have my precious cargo in the back, and I feel like I'm always super on edge when I drive.

DH has handsfree in his car; I don't so I only glance at my phone at lights.
kiwi / 568 posts
My DH does. Not to a teenager level, but it is so dangerous and it drives me insane!
I hope that once our LO comes and my nagging will make him realize how dangerous it is.
coffee bean / 33 posts
My DH does despite my constant nagging to stop. I do think he's cut way back though.
I'm guilty of checking my phone at lights.
FWIW, we don't have kids yet.

Nope.
Most the time DS is in the car with me and I want to make sure I set an example.
nectarine / 2994 posts
Nope I never do, dh does at lights and it annoys the crap out of me. My mum showed me this clip on youtube when I was learning to drive and I vowed never to do it. Here's the clip: (Is a bit graphic though)

No, far too dangerous, it's up there with drink driving for me. It also bothers me when I see other do it, it's not just their lives they are risking but other innocent people on the road.
