Charlie started calling me mommy instead of mama when he was 17 months old because that's what our nanny called me (I never used the word mommy). I feel like Charlie was so much more of a baby when he used to call me mama. I prefer mama, but I probably have many years of mommy ahead of me... before I become just mom!
Do you prefer mama or mommy or another word for mom?

I refer to myself as umma, mommy and mama! I like umma and mommy best. DH, his siblings and the DILs call MIL MAMMY!

LO is too little to call me anything but I prefer "mommy" only because in Cantonese (my hubs/in-laws are Chinese), "mama" means "grandma"...
I hope LO will call me "umma", though.

I never really thought about it but I am fine with mommy. Once my daughter progressed from saying mama to mommy she has stuck with mommy. I imagine this will naturally progress to mom at some point. Although I have a few friends who still call their moms, mommy in their 30s. I don't think that I would want that, though.

I still call my mom Mama! I hadn't realised there was some sort of natural progression from Mama to Mommy to Mom.

I think I'll prefer "mama". My husband and I both call our moms "mum". I think it's sort of a Massachusetts thing to pronounce it that way. Also, if hubs is yelling for his mother he usually says "Maaaaaaa".

never really thought about it - but I think I like mama better. However whenever I talk to our LO I always call myself Mommy - he is only 5 months, but I think I'll change it up.

@Grace: i should clarify i meant in terms of language development. babies generally start off being able to say "mama" first as it is easier to say than mommy or mom. but obviously, they can call you whatever they want in the end!

A funny little story: I asked my Mom what she wants to be called and her response was, "Mama!". When I asked her why, she said I'd be called Mommy and so she can be called Mama (she think's she's too young to be call a granny ... LOL).
Thing is, kids call their parents "mamma" and "pappa" exclusively here. So yeh ... umm that's not gonna happen =)
But honestly, I'm not sure which name I prefer. I'm actually leaning towards mommy.

I hope my children call me mum, mummie, or mumma. Those are what I call my mum. I much prefer them over mom or mommy for some reason. Let's hope my bambinos stick with it!

I call my mom "Mommy" or "Mom." She is the queen of stupid nicknames though and I am her heir. So we are, at times, Mumilsy-wumilsy and Naisy Noodle Doodle Pumpkin Bear, among other less idiotic things.
My kids will inherit the stupid nickname curse (they have some already despite not existing. Like Choco-Lottie and Lexy Bear.) While I like the sound of "Mommy", I'm sure I'll end up answering to anything that starts with an M.

Mum or mummy. We don't say mom here and I actually find it hard to get my accent around!
