Yes we put some away for later. My kids bdays are in late Nov so we are overwhelmed with presents this time of year. My 3 year old has no issue when I tell her "we have SO MANY new toys, let's save these to play with another day."

Nah, we don't do toy rotations - they can open and play with everything!

We've done that with birthdays and Christmas- she is one spoiled kid (LOTS of relatives).if we opened it all, she wouldn't play with anything. So I'll save a few things for later, when she's getting bored with the current toys, or for a car trip or something.

If I felt like my kids had too many presents, I would hold onto the presents I personally bought them. I think gifts from others should be opened and acknowledged right away. You can still rotate toys after they've been opened if you feel like there's too many out at once.

Yup, I don't open them all at once. I always put some away to open at a later date. The hard part is keeping her cousins from opening the package!

@Bao: I bought too much this year! So, I'm putting two things into storage for her birthday in June. Birthday = done! I wouldn't let her open gifts and then take some away, though.

We open all of our presents on Christmas Day.

We've never rotated toys but I would if he had a real overload of toys or if we had more kids! He just had a birthday but only got a few new toys- none from us, so it hasn't been too crazy.

Not really. Last year we did give away a couple things from the IL's that were too old for them. Like aged 6+ with tons of tiny pieces and I had an infant and 2 year old. I don't like to save things that we can't use for a long time because I would probably forget about them!
I do want to try rotating toys more and I need to be better about putting away the ones that don't get used anymore. Maybe Christmas will be the catalyst for finally getting on that.

@regberadaisy: Sort of off topic, I've been kicking around the idea of doing more like a 12 days of Christmas type of thing next year, letting him open one thing every night leading up to Christmas, then opening 2-3 Santa gifts on Christmas Day, so that he does get to enjoy it. I remember his birthday was confusing to him because he kept opening stuff and wanting to immediately play with it instead of opening the next gift. It ended in him just being pissed because he thought we were taking away his new toys, when we were just trying to get him to open the next toy lol

We always do this for birthday presents. It's a lifesaver throughout the year when you just need something new!

we open them all (or will be), but I rotate toys in general! so I'm sure she'll gravitate toward certain things. for instance, her birthday, she got magnatiles, a ton of princess gear, and shopkins. she was aaaaall about the shopkins and princess stuff but didn't really get amped about the magnatiles, so I stuck them in the top of a closet. A few weeks later she was bored so we took them out. To me, it wasn't any different than it being on her floor and her ignoring it, you know?

After everythings opened Christmas day (and I'm doing it in the days leading up) I'm storing a lot of stuff in the basement to rotate out with the new toys after awhile. She doesn't need 8 little people sets upstairs at once lol.

We have done this in the past and will probably do it again if we can get away with it (she is 2). Our families spoil her like crazy and always get way too much for her, so it has been easy to make a few things disappear without her noticing. Last year, we had a ton of snow days so it was nice to have new things to play with when she was home from daycare. Her birthday was in Oct and we did the same thing. She gets everything eventually (usually within a month or two) so I don't see how it's a big deal.

No, we do it for birthdays when they have large parties, but they actually don't get a ton of Christmas gifts so we let them have it all :). It's spaced out since we do gifts with in-laws, my extended fam, and us 4 at different times.

Our LO is only 6 months old, and from what I've been hearing from grandparents, they've pretty much bought the entire Target toy aisle of age appropriate gifts. He doesn't *need* that much stuff all at once, and I don't *want* all that stuff out in my living room. There isn't much that we got him that we could set aside for later, as we only bought him 4 things for Christmas, one of them being his convertible car seat. I will be storing grandparent and auntie gifts and rotating out to keep things fresh - I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
