I've ALWAYS said "splitting image" but am noticing that people are saying "spitting image", too. I Googled both and it seems as though both are acceptable. I want to know which is the real, actual, correct term.
How do you say it?

Splitting?! That sounds to me like "For all intensive purposes" - hehe. I said that til I was in my 20s!

Add me to the list of never hearing splitting before! I wonder if it is regional?

Splitting was new to me too, I'd never heard that before!
@JoJoGirl: hahaha, I thought that too!!! I'm sure I was well into my 20s before I realized it was "intents and purposes"! Ha!

@Jojogirl - LOL! I was talking to DH about this post right now and mentioned your "intensive purposes" comparison and he didn't see how that was wrong! What?!?! He's very highly educated and I couldn't believe it since he uses the term quite regularly in his work! Had to google it and make sure he "corrects" this little malapropism in his daily work life! hehehe - so very few opportunities where I feel like I know more than him!

Haha this reminds me of Gloria on Modern Family, when she says "doggie dog world" and "blessings in the skies"

@Ree723: @shopaholic: Bahaha, right?? That's the one I hear people get wrong ALL the time. It's funny how if you stop to think about it "intensive purposes" makes no sense. @shopaholic: I LOVE that your DH was still saying it before yesterday, ha ha!

Spitting image is the correct original saying if you check the etymology of the saying, but then for some reason people started saying "splitting" instead of spitting. This is very popular in the part of england where I lived and I would always fight the urge to correct people.

I've never heard of splitting image. Yes, "all intensive purposes" makes me crazy. Same with when people say "It's a mute point." No, it's MOOT point. Hubs used to use "in lieu of" as "in honor of" rather than "instead of." It drove me nuts and he'd get so mad when I tried to correct him.

@Rubies: LOL Don't worry...I avoid this phrase at all costs because I have no clue and I don't want to sound insane. I've heard it both ways equally i'd say.

@mrsjyw: Likewise! I can never get phrases correct. I always thought it was "Nip it in the butt" instead of "Nip it in the bud".
