The last two times I've taken B (3) to the park, other three year olds have had toy guns on the playground. Do others see this a lot? How do you explain them to your little one?

I've seen older kids with like nerf gun type things, or water soaker in the summer. But never just a plain toy gun. I just tell him that we don't play with those kinds of toys, and leave it at that.

Just brightly colored Nerf guns at the park which don't bother me, personally, at all. One of the last times we were at the park in the summer some boys were playing with Nerf guns and darts and there was a parent there freaking out and going from other parent to parent to see if it was their kids because she was offended by the Nerf guns and was worried it could hurt someone. I thought that was a little bit of an overreaction because the kids weren't aiming them at anyone or involving anyone else.

I can't think of a single time. But I'm in the fairly liberal suburbs of NYC, so I don't think it's as much a part of the culture.

Now that you mention it I don't see kids playing with you guns or realistic swords all that much anymore. Brightly colored foamed "weapons" are fine IMO. I would be more concerned with how the kids play with these things- are they acting out violence they see on TV etc.

Just fluorescent water guns during the warmer months. Usually at a friend's house.

We've seen them once at the park and once at a friends house. I've told B that sometimes you don't know if those are real or fake so we don't play with them.
We have bright colored water guns and a Nerf foam bow & arrow--those are fine with me. I even think DH has a foam Nerf gun that he's saving for DS. It's realistic looking guns that bother me and are an absolute NO in our house.

Yeah these aren't the brightly colored need guns. These are realistic looking guns. One had the orange tip so as an adult I knew it was not real, but the one today was in a freakin holster on this kids hip. It looked as real as real can be. He was 3!
I guess that's what I get for living in Texas.

@wheres_c: Okay that would freak me out. Too many stories lately of kids finding their parents' weapons.

@wheres_c: we haven't seen it at the park. But I have seen it on Facebook. We are also in Texas and I'm not a fan.

@wheres_c: No, I haven't seen any kids with realistic looking toy guns in my area. I would be a little freaked out if I did, especially in the scenario you described!

I have just once, at the local park. The guns were extremely realistic looking (at least to me), and it freaked me out so much that we left
Eta: and the kids were like 7-9 yo and acting super sketchy in how they were playing. I didn't see any parents around.

No, never, but it's very anti-guns where I live so that makes sense.

No. The only things I've seen recently was a kid making toy guns out of train tracks. It was a little weird and I definitely told him to stop pointing at me and DD. so yeah,
Real looking ones would freak me out and we would probably leave. I personally don't think the public park is the right place to let your kid play with their toy guns.

We have a lot of neighborhood boys between the ages of 7 and 11, who play right in front of our house. They often play with nerf and squirt guns, and every once in a while with the shiny old fashioned cap guns. But never with anything real looking. They're having fun and playing outside, so it doesn't bother me.

@wheres_c: that's upsetting. I don't think I've seen it around here yet, but it would bother me.

I've never seen it in a playground around here. I did see a bunch in a dollar general store in NH and was so surprised I took a picture of them. Id probably leave too.

@wheres_c: Lots of toy guns here, but I live in a rural, big hunting area. My DH and I are TTC so no little ones yet, but we do have lots of guns and hunting equipment in the house so our kids will be taught about proper handling, and care from a young age, and appropriate ways to play with toy guns as well.

I'm in Texas too, but I haven't seen toy guns here (aside from water guns).

3 of my close friends let their kids play with toy guns and weapons around the house, and even fake-shoot people in the face LO is not here yet (due in 3 days!) but I do not look forward to be the "strict mommy" who says no.... but I will. My parents didn't even let me play video games with guns, nerf guns, or paintball growing up, so.....
