I never have before but I decided this year I'm going to challenge myself to read 22 books. DH picked the number ;), I'm interested to see if I can do it since I will soon be caring for a newborn as well as a toddler!

No, but I think that is a great idea as it might make me focus on taking time to read, which is something I really enjoy.

I never have, but I like the idea. I'm finishing graduate school next month, so it's something I may actually be able to do this year. I like your number - I'm going with 22!

@mfa_lady: good luck @MrsH: I love reading too and really want to set aside more time for it, so I think this will help. Last year I only read 13 but we had a lot going on.
honeydew / 7667 posts
@Bao: I'd say I should shoot for 13 but then I'd feel like the slacker of the thread I don't know how reading and a newborn will mix but I do read really fast.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@MrsH: I think 13 would be a great number. Or even 12, a book a month so that it doesn't become overwhelming. There are some people that read 150+ books a year, how?! Lol

I did decide about 2 years ago to starting reading again. I'd basically quit reading for pleasure in law school because I had no time, then I just got out of the habit. Last year I set a goal but I can't remember what it was. I want to say 12, I think just a book a month. I started using goodreads to keep track, which has been awesome. I just counted and I did 20 books in 2013. (well, 21 if you count the half of a book I read before I quit because I hated it (wolf of wall street, what a douche lol) and the half of the book I'm currently reading (Inferno)).
Seems like a good number… maybe I'll set me goal for next year at 20 as well.

@Mae: That's how I keep track too, I love Goodreads You know that you can click on "stats" and it will show all your stats for the year, right? Even down to the number of pages you read, I found that neat.

I normally don't but I have for 2014. Last year I read 20 books. This year I'm hoping for about 52 (one per week).

A couple of years ago, I decided to read all the books on Entertainment Weekly's The New Classics list. There are 100 books on it. So far I've read 55, but I keep getting distracted and reading other things. I'm hoping I'll eventually finish! It did cause me to read books I otherwise would have never picked up.
Here's the list: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20207349,00.html

@Koolbreeze: That's a great number, good for you!
@mrsbookworm: Did you find a lot of them interesting? I tend to not go for books that don't look appealing to me either, but maybe I should try something like that out!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@mrsbookworm: oh some of those are actually on my to read list! I am going to bookmark that list, thank you!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@MrsH: Have you never heard of it before? If you make an account feel free to add me I have like...7 friends lol!
clementine / 918 posts
@MrsH: 13 is a great number. I remember reading somewhere that the average person reads 1 book a year, so your goal is 13 times that.
My goal is usually 2/month, so 24 for the year. Since having LO, I think I've only done it one month. I'm going to try harder in the new year. It'd really help if L starts sleeping through the night and I don't fall asleep after a few pages every night

@Mae: There's a little "2014 challenge" thing on the right side of the Goodreads page where you can type in the number of how many books you want to read that year, I just found that...how cool!
coconut / 8234 posts
I don't set challenges because I'm a voracious reader. Working on two books right now...the first books of 2014. I'd love to read 100 books in a year but that is way too ambitious. Maybe 40?
pear / 1823 posts
@bao: I liked most of the books from the list. Only one or two duds
I'm on goodreads too if anyone wants to be friends I'm pandasandbooks

Only insofar as I challenge myself to read everything that I need to read for school! I'll be starting my exam prep next year, so the number will be around...300 or so? Yeah...

@Bao: when I read for fun, I always have two going at once, in case I get bored with one!

Not me but my 17 yr old DSS has his NY resolution to read 52 books this year - wow!
honeydew / 7589 posts
Haha no this never occurred to me. I read A LOT, so if anything I'd resolve to read less so I could get other things done!
pomegranate / 3604 posts
I never used to but started keeping track in the latter half of 2013 (thanks goodreads!). I managed 109 books in 8 months.
I want to read 125 this year but with a newborn AND a toddler come August....well we'll see.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@LovelyPlum: See i always get confused if I try and read a couple of books at once...or maybe I'm just weird about finishing one before starting another? lol idk
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@mrsbookworm: wow that's pretty good! @Mae: and holy moly we are 96% similar lol
papaya / 10343 posts
@Bao: Nice! I'll have to pay attention to your ratings of things since we have similar tastes!

@Mae: Inferno is GREAT...but I read it while pregnant...you'll see why that wasn't the best situation lol hope you love it too!
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
I do the Goodreads reading challenge every year! In 2013 I set a goal of 50 but only made it to 47! I think I'll keep it at 50 for this year as well
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@mrsbookworm: I was thinking the same thing going through everyone's lists!
