I had never heard the second verse of You Are My Sunshine (the sad one...) and neither had DH. We heard it for the first time after E was born on the children's radio station on Pandora. Neither of our moms ever sang it to us. Did anyone ever sing the second verse to you? Do you sing it to your LO?

I sing the first verse but I sing a different last line - I sing, 'please god bless my sunshine today' instead

I didn't know it before I had LO but yes, I sing it to her now for a little variety. Sometimes I do just sing the widely known verse though because I know relatively soon she might realize what the other verse says and how sad it is.

Yes I sing both verses because my mom always sang them to me. I think I have happy thoughts about the song just because I have memories of my mama singing to me and I didn't focus so much on the lyrics.
Also.. you are my sunshine is the only thing that puts my babe to sleep. But all she cares about at this point is the melody. So if my husband and I have to talk during bed time we have had full conversations to the tune of you are my sunshine : )

Yep! My dad sung both verses to me at bed time! He also sang this song to me at my wedding (first verse only) so I am pretty partial to it!

I do sing it! I know it from the "O brother where art thou?" soundtrack. I know it's sad, but at this point he doesn't know what it means. Maybe I'll change it for when he's older.

I think that's actually the first verse, no? Johnny cash sang that verse first....I found out when I was you tubing the song so I could sing the correct lyrics to my kids....

I don't sing it because even the first verse chokes me up! I think I will adopt the last line @sorrycharlie:mentioned. Much better!
I have a kids cd in which the last line of rockabye baby was changed to "...when the bough breaks, the cradle will fall, and mommy/daddy will catch you, cradle and all." Also better.

Mr. Hedgie used to sing the first verse to me all the time. I was so cute because he can't even kinda sing! The boy is tone deaf! Now he sings it to my belly.

@Running Elley: That is so sad. We saw B.B. King in concert a few days ago and he sang You Are My Sunshine for at least 15 minutes and didn't include the second verse. It was really cool though
