I have been using my debit card for so long I rarely write checks.
At the grocery store, which always has long lines anyway the woman in front of me pulled out her check book and I was like "oh no......"

Rarely. I use checks for professional meetings or extracurricular activities like daycare date night.
ETA: I wrote my first bad check by mistake a couple of months ago. I ran out of checks for my professional meeting. I found some in our closet. It had the right names and address, so I used them. Turns it out, they were from a closed account. Whoops! I got new checks right away.

Wow I have never seen someone writing a check at the store!
We still use checks for church offering & for weddings.

I doubt that any stores around here would accept a cheque. I write them out for my dog groomer, and.... that might be it.

Local restaurants here only take cash or check. Rent has to be paid by check. My stylist has to be paid by check.

Whoa, that is still allowed at a grocery store?! Definitely not around here!
I pay for dog shows with cheques. Used to pay for all stuff related to horse (board, vet, farrier, etc) with them. E-mail money now (daycare, trades, etc) when I previously would have used a cheque. Most dog people aren't up on it yet, so I keep them for that.

Yes at weddings, paying our tax guy and occasionally to one of my friends if I owe them money. Oh and random medical bills if they don't have a website cause I don't like writing my credit card number down and mailing it out.

Only paying people back for stuff or things that can't be paid by debit/credit (like our accountant or our taxes). Whenever someone pulls out a checkbook in public I have to squash the urge to be all OMG ARE YOU KIDDING ME.

No, we don't even have any which presents an issue about once or twice a year but otherwise is just a non issue. We do frequently use the online bill pay though which does let us send a check to someone so for example if we split something with one of our siblings we will mail them a check through there since they are too far away to just give cash.

Previously just for rent. But now we have been writing a lot of checks to our adoption agency.

I forgot my check card in a different pair of pants the other day and found myself at the grocery store with only a pack of checks wedged in the dark recesses of my wallet. It was the first time I'd paid with a check in years!

For my rent and health insurance, the only group that doesn't allow paying online.

For a few bills - Rent, storage until, utilities, car payment. A few of those could be transitioned to online payments, just haven't got around to it yet.
I see people writing checks at the grocery store fairly often.

We pay our monthly maintenance by check and I also have credit cards I haven't transferred to online payment yet (don't know what I'm waiting for!)

For rent, dry cleaning, daycare and some other random bills like taxes and medical. Everything else is online bill pay.

Only for church and weddings. Cheques aren't taken in most retail places here.

Only for haircuts. I send electronic checks through the bill pay feature at the bank, but write them almost never.

Yes, for daycare mostly.
Also, there's one friend that I pay often by checks. We go to lunch together a lot, and it's easier for one person to pay. Neither of us carry cash, and she works in a bank, so checks are just as convenient for her.

Yes. Mortgage, car payment, a few utilities and car payment. A lot of them are small businesses or local credit unions and don't have online options.

Only for daycare and our HOA because they charge a 3% convenience fee for online payments! {HOA, not daycare.}
And other random type things like school portraits and book orders for my son.

Never in public but I do sometimes to pay the quarterly insurance bill, etc.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
Like others said - for HOA, monetary gifts, and a few random bills here and there. But that's it!

Not if I can help it! Checks are the number one thing that drives me nuts about banking in the US. Whyyyyy do they still exist?
That being said, I write them for daycare because that's all out daycare lady will take.
