I started doing this with the harder books we read together, and I think it really helps with learning! But it also kind of breaks up the rhythm and momentum of the story, so not sure how to balance it. Wondering if anyone else stops to explain what certain words mean while you're reading a book with your kids?

I'm a K-2 teacher and early literacy is my passion! I read with dd on a daily basis but she's only 16 months so at this point every word is a new word, lol.
With my students though, often times if they get to a tricky word we will stop and I will prompt them to figure out what it means on their own. "Read the sentence again - are there any context clues?" "Read the rest of the paragraph - it might give you a hint" "Take a look at the picture - does it help us figure out what the word means?" "are there any word parts that we know? Does it look similar to other words?" Etc etc. If they still don't know what the word means they will grab our class iPod touch and ask Siri - the modern day dictionary, haha

I do, and sometimes DS will ask me what a word means, so we talk about it.

I do if my son asks what the word means, and then we discuss it and pick up where we left off. I don't worry too much about continuity at this point!

No, not unless she stops me and asks what it means. I feel that she's learning what the words mean by how they're used, and the context-- I remember learning a lot of words that way myself.

@Charm54: I teach seventh grade and do the same thing! It's one of those skills that never stops being important.
