My kids wear thin fleece in the car. I take their jackets off and put back on when we get there. I also bring blankets

We have fleece coats specifically for wearing in the car. My parents think I'm crazy and feel bad for my kids, but our cars warm up quickly and they have blankets too, so I know they're fine. For playing outside, they have thicker warmer coats.

    @regberadaisy: that's what we do!

I buy Patagonia down sweaters, they seem to be warm but thin enough in the seat.

She has a hardcore winter coat for playing outside that goes on when we get to where we are going. It is below 0 here, but I am grateful for heated underground parking!

This is huge in terms of safety - if you aren't going to have the straps fastened properly (i.e., too loose), then the seat cannot properly protect your child in case of an accident.

It's worth taking the time to put the coat on after they come out of the carseat. We put LO in a thin sweater and then put a blanket on top of the carseat if it is cold in the car. If she needs a real coat, it can be put on after she comes out of the seat.

i keep the carseat straps at a comfortable/safe length for no coat. if he's wearing something that fits under that (like a sweater or patagonia fleece) then it's fine- anything thicker has to come off.

We keep a plush blanket in the car to cover him with and if I'm taking him into daycare or something like that, I'll just wrap him up in it and carry him in, rather than trying to put his coat on. It's a brief 15-20 steps so if it's not really bitter cold, we'll do without.

LO wears a North Face fleece over whatever layers she had indoors, and then we also use this car seat poncho as an extra layer.

It took some getting used to for LO (and DH) but now we really like it.

We have a puffy coat for being outside and not in a car.

@Ree723: apparently Australians are immune to the laws of physics! New Zealand shares the Australian standard but fortunately we also accept American and European seats.

LO has a 3-in-1 coat from Children's Place. It has a fleece liner and a windproof shell. Combined it's a heavy-duty winter jacket. We walk to the car with both. Take off the shell and buckle into the carseat wearing the fleece. It's not that big a deal once I got used to it.

Yes, every time. We live in frigid upstate NY but have gotten really good about coat off every time. The bulk changes the dynamics of the restraints. If it's really cold, we offer him the coat on his lap over the belt or a blanket.

It doesn't get cold enough here for puffy winter coats but I take off DD's jacket if I would have to loosen the straps if she kept it on. I feel that it's better safe than sorry... I usually just take it off.

Yes, I always take off their puffy jackets before putting them in their car seats. Some jackets are okay, like E has a very thin north face, and I don't have to adjust the straps if she's wearing it. I also think the fleece infant bunting suits are okay.

Doesn't get cold enough here for puffy jackets but our LO's take off their sweaters/jackets (even thin ones) when getting in the car. They just don't like to wear them so it works out for me, though it can be annoying when we are in a hurry haha.

Anything that would require I readjust their straps comes off in the car. They dress on layers, always have hats and mittens, and we bring blankets.

I take car seat safety very seriously. Any child passenger while I'm driving won't be in a puffy coat under a five point harness.

Always. We have car coats for the girls and fleece ponchos on top for good measure.

Yes. We take off our DD's winter coat and our baby has a cover for his infant seat - so no coat either. We live in Canada, it's super cold, we get lots of looks. I might not be so anal about it if we didn't live in a rural area so when we drive it's on a major highway and with lots of semi truck traffic. I'd just rather get the looks...

We do. Her winter coat is way too puffy.

It's sooo annoying but I want to be safe!

No, we only use coats that are car seat safe in the car.
