I make them say "Trick or Treat" before handing them candy.

I assume my husband at least greets them with a "hello" before giving them candy but I don't know. DH has to stay outside in the garage to hand out candy because anyone coming to the front door will set off the dogs and that's too much barking for one night.

I open the door and expect them to say Trick or Treat to me first. Sometimes, if they don't, I'll wait and then say, "Happy Halloween!" If that still doesn't get a response, I look up at their parents who are at the sidewalk. Awkward silences FTW.

I tell them how cute/great they look, and let them pick something out of the bowl no matter what.
DH won't give them anything if they don't say Trick or Treat.

I always say happy Halloween! And I will say something about the costume if it's exceptionally cute or unique.

I always say happy Halloween, and tell them something I like about their costume. I love little trick or treaters!

LOLLOLOLOL I've never not said trick or treat for my candy. This will be our first year getting trick or treaters, so I will report back. They better say trick or treat! I made sure not to get candy corn, and got the good stuff! I plan to ask them what their costumes are if I'm unsure as I'm too old to trick or treat, and don't have kids myself!

My Dh just asked me this, I think he feels awkward! I just tell then they look really good/scary and comment on costumes "wow you're a cat!" Etc. then hand out the sweets!

In St. Louis, you have to tell a joke (the trick) to get candy so you could always say, "What's your joke." In Wisconsin they don't do that so I usually just comment on their costume and say Happy Halloween.

Wait, some people just open the door and wordlessly mete out candy? I am not the biggest social butterfly but wouldn't that be really awkward?

I try to comment on their costume
Last year we had some teenage boys trick or treating and while they were walking up I could hear them singing some song (it was whatever song was viral last Halloween) and I made them sing it to me before I gave them candy. If you are a teenager trick or treating I will make you work for it
@TemperanceBrennan: I like your joke idea! Maybe I'll ask the teens that this year. And hope they don't TP my house this weekend hahahah.

I usually feign shock/fear (all UK Halloween costumes are horror themed) then offer the bowl, commenting on how great or how scary each child looks as they come forward and take their sweets. Then, as they are going, I say "Happy Halloween".

I make a little small talk and tell them how cute they look in their costumes!

I chat with the kiddos. Theie eyes light up when I can guess what they are.

I'm not comfortable around kids (adults too really) so I don't know what to say. When I try and comment on their costumes I feel like they just stare at me like "STFU and give us candy already." I just smile awkwardly.

@NorCalWayfarer: It was so much fun as a kid. We would get the Halloween joke books from the Scholastic Book Club order form thing and then we would spend the weeks before picking out the perfect joke (and backup jokes in case someone stole yours). My mom (who handed out candy) would keep notes of her favorite jokes to tell us at the end of the night.

I've only handed out candy once before and we only got one trick or treater so he got A LOT of candy. It helped that he was dressed as my college mascot
This year in our new house we're supposed to get a decent amount and I'm fairly nervous - isn't that silly? I think I'll say Happy Halloween and try to make comments on their costumes. If they are silent I'll make them say trick or treat!!

@mamimami: haha, I was thinking the same thing. I just can't imagine opening my door to a bunch of dressed up and excited little kids and just shoving my bowl towards them silently; that would be so weird!
I say "happy halloween" and/or compliment them on their costumes.

I've been trying to talk to them, but they're not really interested in talking. I ask them what they're costumes are, and they give me attitude! Little kids too y'all. "I'm superman, don't you see the S on my costume!?!?" Oh, ok....

I always talk to them. I love trick or treaters. My husband makes fun of me because I get so excited when they come to the door.
