An annoying thing people keep telling me is that once i have another kid, we'll DEFINITELY need 2 cars.
We both take public transit/bike to work/daycare, and we are hoping that any activities will be within walking/biking distance. I'm sure there will be some days where 2 cars will be useful, but i don't foresee those days being frequent.
So if you have 2+ kids, were 2 cars a necessity for you? Any 2+ families surviving (happily) with one car?

Yes, we definitely need 2 cars but our circumstances are different. We needed 2 cars even when we had no kids.

Not really an answer to your question, but DH and I have one kid and we share a car and people tell us the same thing all the time. It's aggravating. We have a compact 2-door Yaris, so we'll probably need to get a bigger car if we have another child, but I don't think we'd need an extra car. One car families unite!

@Freckles: We have two cars because we don't live in a walkable city. I can see it being doable when they're young, but once they're in school it seems like it would be a pain trying to coordinate everyone's schedules and activities.

If you have good public transportation that you don't mind taking and one car is fine with one kid, I don't really see why it wouldn't be fine with two! It's not like your having quadruplets and they can't all fit in one car when you need to drive somewhere haha.
Eta: I say this as a former NYer who knows parents with zero cars

I don't think the number of kids makes 2 cars necessary, but rather your lifestyle. If DH could metro to work, we would probably only have one and a ZipCar membership.

2 kids, 1 car. It definitely depends where you live, but since we spend our weekends together it isn't an issue. I think once kids have activities further away on the weekends, we will buy another car but I don't foresee that happening for awhile.

@Katrocap: We have a small Subaru wagon and we're always being told that we need to get a bigger car too! No thanks!
@autumnlove: Oh for sure. We've tried to set things up so that driving is quite minimal, so it pains me to think about adding another car.

If DH could take public transportation to work, we would only need one car. We did one car for awhile but we don't live in a walkable city so pediatric appointments and regular errands were too hard to get to.

Our city is not walkable at all, so 2 cars were a must for us! The pathetic thing is, we literally only use it for DH's commute. That's it! So yes, if we had better public transportation or if he and I worked in the same area, we could definitely get away with 1 car.

People who say that usually don't understand public transportation, lol.
We have one car in a non walkable city, but it works because our work location is the same.

I don't see why you would need two cars just because you have another child. We were fine with one car until DH got a new job that he had to drive to. I can't imagine what we would've done with two cars before even if we had another kid. Maybe on weekends when they are older and have different activities but certainly not when at least one is a baby.

we have 2 cars with one kid but are getting rid of one because DH now takes public transit to work and the second car no longer gets used. I can't see a need for 2 cars unless you and your DH both need to drive separately to work. Oh and we are planning to have another LO within the next year and don't plan on getting another car to go with the baby! we do want to upgrade to a minivan though.

We need two cars even without kids, but I think if you're doing fine now with one kid I don't see why adding another kid automatically makes it so you need another car.

Other than that though why would you need two cars if you can use public transport or walk? Funny thing for people to say.

I totally get the couples who have to drive to work and so the two cars are necessary (so i'm not knocking the 2 cars)!
But people keep telling us that once our kids are in sports/activities we're going to have to trek them everywhere and 2 cars will be necessary. Okay, glad to know i'm not delusional in thinking we'll be fine.

@Freckles: I think it's more about we're you love and your lifestyle and what type of car you have than whether you have one or more kids!

We will only need a second car when we move to the 'burbs. In the city, one is just fine (and most of our friends with kids don't have a car at all!).
