There is a glider that I really like, but the back of it isn't high enough that I'd be able to rest my head on it. For those of you with gliders, do you think one with a high back is necessary? We have really comfortable leather recliner in our living room and I could always use that if I wanted to sit somewhere with a high back, but the glider would obviously be upstairs in the nursery. Thoughts?

I think it's important that it comes up to your shoulders/lower neck. Then you have some support back there while rocking.

If you're going to be using it for MOTN feedings, then yes. It's so nice to be able to lean my head back and doze a little bit!

Yes, I think so. We use our glider every day (it's in our living room, not nursery) and I definitely wouldn't use it as much if it didn't have support for my head.

I think the high back is definitely necessary, but none of the pictures of the glider show a person actually sitting in it to give us a better idea of how high the back is

@hilsy85: We're going with modern nursery furniture, so I would like our glider to fit in. I don't mind just the standard looking gliders, but I think they'd totally clash with the rest of the furniture. Babyletto also has some high-back modern-looking gliders, but they seem really big, and might overwhelm the space. I wish I could find a store that had them so I could actually look at them in person!
ETA: Oh, and this one is about half the price of the other Babyletto ones!

I'm 5'2 with a short torso and am fine. Usually I'm looking at my phone or my LO while nursing. In the middle of the night I stick a pillow long ways up behind me so I can rest my head. Easy and I like how it looks and its more compact. When we move it to another room I usually sit curled up sideways to read so it'll be fine then too.

A high back was an absolute necessity for us because my husband is 6'6". We went with the pottery ban kids wing back rocker (pretty much the only one we could find that was comfortable for him and attractive enough for me). We looove it. Believe me you will appreciate being able to rest your head when you are rocking a fussy baby in the middle of the night.

As someone pointed out though, they never show these rockers with someone sitting in them. I wish they would so you could tell if it's a high enough back.

@sweetooth: I really really like that glider, but DH would die if I showed him a glider that was over $1K! He wants to just go to BRU and get one for $150!

@scg00387: Thanks for that link! I am 5'5 and I guess my torso is average? A lot of the reviews said the same thing about putting a pillow lengthwise and it being fine. I also like that it's compact because we could move it to our office or keep it in LO's room and he/she could use it to read in.

@shopaholic: I know! I saw it on there and that's what made me start the thread (but thanks for the heads up!). Afterwards I went to Amazon, though, and they actually have it for a few dollars cheaper on there, and I can get free shipping with Prime, so I am going to hold off for now. I will search other threads....thank you!!

I like my Dutailer glider because it has a high back but it isn't very modern or cute!

But in this instance, I'd go for function over form. There are lots of cute high-backed gliders out there!

Yes for me! I tried out a ton of gliders at BBB and didn't feel totally comfy in any that didn't have a high enough back.

That's funny, that's the glider we have. It IS a pain for napping....my husband and I put a pillow on the back when we want to nap.

I'm sure you can use a pillow or something, maybe even a boppy around your neck! Haha. In the middle of the night you really don't care about cuteness. So it really depends on how you see yourself using it. We have a high-backed custom upholstered glider and it's great, but I actually prefer using our 10 year old hand-me-down ugly Dutalier glider because it's SO much more comfortable. It's just MADE for a sleepy parent holding a child in the middle of the night.

As many of the Bees suggested - I have rocker with a low back and I just put a pillow on it and it was totally fine & comfortable. And I feel like I'll use it more than just a nursery rocker because it goes with our home more than the ones at BRU, etc.

@mrs. mochi: We didn't. My DH is tall, so he really wanted something he could lean his head back on. I still love that glider, though! We ended up going with the brown leather Ikea poang rocker. Baby isn't here yet, but we like the look of it, and it's comfortable to sit in.

@LAWBEE11: My husband and I tried out the Poang rocker and regular chair, but it felt really low and deep to us - difficult to get up with bab in arms? Does the Poang rocker take up a lot space? I felt that rockers took up more space than a glider.
