@Silva: Good article! This video made a similar point, in a less direct fashion:

Eh, I think the relationship is a mutual relationship of exploitation. The most talented athletes go to the best schools because they know they will be seen, have professional teams fighting over them and they'll have the opportunity to be a multimillionaire. The school wants top talent to get additional funds.

Absolutely not. If they want to personally benefit more than a scholarship, they should go pro.
For those of you that are upset that the Big schools with Big sports programs are making so much money, you do realize that in most cases a good majority of that money goes towards funding for the "lesser" sports programs, right? Women's sports and obscure sports in particular benefit because they lose money.

@Silva: Great article!
I think the rules need changed. It's ridiculous what college sports have become and then are still referred to as amateur - ain't nothing amateur about it. Sorry, if you're watching college football, bball on national TV regularly, I'm not sure how the title 'amateur athlete' really makes any sense.
Also the NCAA is just too controlling. You can't even run a race over the summer and have your entry paid for or they'll say you've violated their rules on being an amateur. It's utter ridiculousness.

@Silva: great article!
my initial thought was "heck no!" but i forgot about the subtleties. the problem is, there are a lot of nuances between one autograph and a BMW and i think that's why there is a "zero tolerance" rule. it will be interesting how this plays out over the years!

@Silva: Lots of interesting points in that article. I didn't know that athletes have to sign away their likenesses. That seems wrong to me.
Yet I still don't think I'm convinced that athletes should be paid. Even if you set aside the formal education they ought to be receiving, the training they receive is world class. They are being taught by the best coaches and in the best facilities. It is like an apprenticeship and as part of the program, you devote hours to practice, games and other activities.

No, I think college scholarships should be enough. I agree with the mentioned above- it is similar to an internship/apprenticeship (I sure never got paid for mine, but my time investment paid off when it came time to look for a paying job). I don't even know how they would begin to regulate it if they paid college athletes.
