I say bigger house because you can contain the mess to certain areas. But when you live in a small apartment -- especially when you have two kids -- every room gets messy. It was easier to keep our last apartment cleaner than this one where we had more space even though there was technically more space to clean.
What about you? Is it harder to keep a bigger place or a smaller place clean?

I think the bigger the house the bigger the mess, but I do see your point about containing the mess in certain areas. I feel like our house will never be clean.

With my husband and I? Definitely a bigger house.
With just me? Somewhere smaller. I'm far more of a minimalist than DH is so I can comfortably live in small spaces. Together, we just have too much stuff that he's unwilling to toss.

by cleaner do you mean less clutter? or actual dirt?
Bigger houses have more square footage to vacuum, sweep, mop and dust and probably more bathrooms to clean.
Smaller spaces tend to get cluttered easier but they're usually a breeze to do the heavy cleaning

I would say smaller. DH tends to leave a trail of mess wherever he goes. It's easier to contain in a small setting. LO obviously has ability to leave a trail of terror as well. I try and contain the two of them to as few rooms as I can.

@Chillybear: not actual dirt, but clutter.. mess... i just put almost all our toys in a garbage bag and brought it into our room and left out 10 toys for the kids to play. we don't even have that many toys -- the garbage bag was half full -- and i don't know how it still creates such a mess.

I think if we had a bigger house we'd have less clutter. Our closets are over flowing.. if we had more storage (aka bigger house) we'd have more room to organize and keep things neat.

I say bigger is easier - right now we live in a 1200 square foot townhouse and our main rooms get dirty fast. We are soon moving to a 3000 sq foot home and I think it will be easier to keep on top of it. Also, the cleaning lady we hired in my first trimester doesn't hurt!! She is seriously my favorite person on the planet.

For us, a bigger house = more stuff. I really like living in a smaller house, but it's all about your closet space. We have extremely small closets, so I'm working on making those spaces store as much as possible neatly.

I've never lived in that big of a house before so I have no idea! Our house is 1300 sq ft and it's pretty cluttered!

@Mrs. Bee: gotcha... in our house I'm the one with constant projects going on so if i can't clean my mess up right away i try to at least contain them to our office and try not to let it bleed over into the rest of the house even if i'm working on a part of it in the living room in front of the TV

I think it's easier to keep a bigger house clean - a smaller space means everything is more cluttered.....and clutter drives this neat freak insane! With a bigger house, everything has it's place and it's so much easier to keep things neat and tidy.
Disclaimer: I am also one of those freaks who really enjoys cleaning - dusting, vacuuming, floors, bathrooms, kitchen etc, but I abhor clutter and not having enough space to put things away!

Oh man, I've never thought of it that way! Our house is pretty roomy and the dining room area, guestroom area(!) and a bedroom is designated as storage AND our living space is still a mess

I always though that the bigger the house, the bigger the mess but we were proven wrong when we moved from our tiny little apt to our big house. Our apt was constantly dirty, the house we have to spot clean every now and then. I think it has alot to do with the perception. It is probably equally as messy but just looks better because there is more space to store the same amount of mess.

Bigger house for sure. You can spread out your storage items more. In a small apartment there is no place for you to store anything so how can you organize?

Bigger is easier. We've lived in sub-1000sq ft apartments since LO was born and it's frustrating. There are never enough closets or cabinets no matter how much stuff I give away. And the lack of garage is hard (our stroller and a bike live indoors!). I've just learned to deal with some clutter.

Since moving out of home (thus being responsible for the cleaning) I've always lived in an apartment or small house, so I can't really compare. However due to lack of storage space I always feel like there's too much clutter!

I agree that a bigger house = more storage space so less clutter. We live in a small home and are constantly complaining about the lack of storage space therefore a lil mess here and there looks A LOT worse than it actually is.... =(

ehhh, well, our house is definitely less cluttered/appears more organized than our apartment was, but there are definitely more dust bunnies rolling around on the floor because it takes FOREVER to swiffer 3 bedrooms and a giant living room. It really doesn't, but I'm lazy...

Bigger is easier to keep organized because there's always a place for everything, but it's def harder to keep cleaner (dust, more to wipe down, vaccum, etc.)

For us, like others, bigger house = more stuff = more clutter It's like more money, more problems. We live in over 2000 sq feet but have VERY little storage (no coat closets, no linen closets) so I feel like everywhere we look, there's just stuff EVERYWHERE. There are graveyards for everything-- the daycare artwork graveyard on our living room windowsill, Wagon Sr.'s shoulder bag graveyard on the floor in front of our TV, the greeting card graveyard on top of our living room bookshelf. We're trying to clear off one surface each day this week. We handled the fireplace mantel (our equivalent of a living room junk drawer) but it's already accumulating more stuff.... ughhhh.
I do wish we had a small, tiny study on the first floor where Wagon Sr. can literally open the door, throw in his crap, and shut (and lock) the door so I don't have to see it. After 10 years together I've come to the conclusion that he just NEEDS to throw crap everywhere. So I wish we had a room with a door he can claim as his own so I don't have to see it!!

when we had a smaller condo it always seems so cluttered and I couldn't stand it. Now we have a larger home and I love that is is easy for it to look tidy and we have tons if storage. If we cant find a home for something right away it goes in either the basement or the garage.

I vote easier in a bigger house. We just doubled our sq footage and keeping things put away is easier because we have more closets and drawers. Also, when stuff is out, it doesnt overwhelm the space as much. Love having some space to spread out our junk!
