Now that Amanda Knox has been tried again and found guilty do you think the US will send her back to Italy?
My husband thinks so in order for us to continue with a good diplomatic relationship.

No. It violates US extradition laws to send someone overseas for being convicted of a crime they could not have been convicted of here.
ETA: Plus, it's not like we have tense/important relations with Italy. They are not a big trade source for us, they are not a military threat. They really have no weight to put pressure on the US.

I don't think they will because of the US law against double jeopardy.

@ShootingStar: that's what I think too. Our double Jeopardy trumps their second trial.

I heard something on the news about how the US may consider it if only to have leverage if they need to extradite someone from Italy in the future, but I think the double jeopardy issue will keep it from happening.

Nope, and I don't think they should. They sent her home.

I think there's a good possibility we will, if Italy makes a formal request. Italy has a legit legal system, and even though there are differences (and I would not want to be subjected to the Italian system),we have a (valid extradition) treaty with Italy (although we have not always strictly adhered to same). Most importantly, the US is in the process of trying to get Edward Snowden back. We can't deny Italy's request without seriously inhibiting our ability to extradite Snowden. And he's a much bigger target for the US.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @ShootingStar: @Shutterbug: Double jeopardy is a US standard. I think the Italians have a three strike system . . .? . . . the point being that even if you were to evaluate this case history applying the US DJ standard, Knox was convicted after the first trial.

I don't think they will, nor do I think they should. I'm by no means an expert, but I think it's too much of a grey area for the US to ship her off to Italy.

@MsLipGloss: this. The saddest thing about this case is that it is all about Amanda Knox and not Meredith Kretcher.

I just want to know what really happened, but probably never will

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I voted for the wrong one! I meant to vote for No, and they had their chance so she should stay here. I accidentally voted for they should send her back. oops!

I think this story has gotten really sad for all involved. I hope we don't send her back, but from what I've read, the double jeopardy thing isn't valid because she was convicted in the first trial, and the second was a lower court.

No. And I don't think we should. Italy's legal system is subpar. And Italy won't extradite to the US in cases where the death penalty would apply (not that I have a problem with that), so I doubt they could make too much of a fuss about it.

I don't think so, and I certainly hope not! While I feel horribly for the family of Meredith and wish they could receive some closure, the evidence against Amanda is absurd and the Italian police and courts have handled the entire case terribly.

I don't think we should and it makes me sad that there is posturing because of the Edward Snowden case.

No, and I don't think that we should. I would really like to know what actually happened though!

Obviously I know nothing about either countries legal system, but from a non-legal standpoint I don't think they should send her back. I mean, is there a chance this could come to a definite conclusion soon or could she be going back and forth forever?
