I never even thought to, but while I was having my hair washed today a woman came over and tipped the lady washing my hair. Do you tip them?

Yea - but only because he/she does more than washing hair... helps blow dry at the end too.

she washes, dries and straightens my hair so I tip her $10!

No. The salon I go to is frickin' expensive! I can't tip the colorist for my $150 highlights, and the stylist for my $45 haircut, and then tip the hair washer too! I HATE how much it already costs at the salon! Sorry, Hair Washer Girl:(

Yes, I do. She spends quite a bit of time washing my hair, and even gives me a mini head massage.
grapefruit / 4006 posts
yes...maybe $3. she does a good job and gives me a nice head massage.

Yes, because the same person usually washes and cuts my hair.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
Where the heck do you guys go?? The same woman washes, cuts and dries for me!

My stylist does his own washing , so I tip him already. If someone else washed it, I would tip them.

I go to an Aveda salon, and they have "Colorists" and then they have "Stylists." No one cuts hair AND colors it, so you have to see 2 different people, and Stylists and Colorists do not wash hair, so I am escorted to a wash room by Hair Washing Girl and she takes care of business there. It's totally ridiculous, I know. But when we moved to FL I had the hardest time finding a place that did not think that blonde highlights should be yellow, and frustration led me to this uppity place and it's totally out of control. Back home (New Orleans) I paid $80 for highlights and a haircut and a blowdry. All by the same fantastic girl.

@sorrycharlie, same here. I've never heard of a salon where anyone other than your stylist washes your hair! My girl does the shampoo, cut, color, style, etc.

I never had a separate person wash my hair until I moved to the DC area. It seems pretty standard here, but where I lived growing up the same person washed, cut and blow dried my hair.

@JHoller25: Yep. Finding someone who can do a great blonde is tough, and always at the fan-see salons with separate cutters and colorists. I haven't paid less than $200 something (before tip!) for cut/color in *years.* And sometimes its not just a separate shampoo person, there is also usually a separate person who dries and styles my hair, too.
When I tip, I tip both the cutter and the colorist separately, but the same percentage, so that there will be enough for a tip for their assistant, too . . . although I don't know that it is shared, but I can only assume that it is.

My hairdresser washes my hair as well- so yep its all included in her tip.

I used to when I went to a place where the stylist didn't do it but $2 was customary so it wasn't a big deal.

I cant even remeber the last time I washed my hair at a salon. Even formy weddin I washed my hair at home first lol. And I tipped only the stylist

I've never had a separate hair-washer at a salon. It's always been the same person who cuts/colors my hair. So I guess, yes
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@sorrycharlie: haha I wondered the same thing. Then again, I get my hair cut at the mall. I'm so cheap.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I don't tip anyone at my salon. I have a separate hair washer, cutter and colorist and none of them get a tip. It's not expected where I live, I love not having to do it.
coconut / 8472 posts
@jholler25: That's funny, I go to an Aveda salon too, but my stylist and colorist are the same person, and that seems to typical of this salon. But my stylist generally doesn't wash my hair, they have separate people for that. My salon's fairly upscale and I've never seen anyone tip the people that wash the hair.

@mediagirl: lol..I'm cheap too. I thought $30 for a shampoo and cut was pricey! (that's what I pay before tip!)
kiwi / 659 posts
I don't... but sometimes it's my stylist that washes my hair, and sometimes a separate person, so it's not really consistent. I kinda feel bad, but like Jholler said, by the time you get done tipping everyone it really adds up! While we're on the subject, what % does everyone usually tip for hair? I'm 20-25%, just want to see if that's normal!
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@MCD919: I do 20%, or round. For instance..if my haircut is $25 I'll give $30..but if it were $26, I'd give $30 if I wasn't a huge fan of the service. Or if it cost $23-24, I'd give $30 if they did a stellar job.

My hair dresser washes, cuts, and styles my hair. So I just give her one tip.
@jholler25: I go to an Aveda salon too. While I don't get my hair colored, it is like yours where coloring and cuts are totally different. Glad that I finally stopped coloring it years ago, otherwise it would too expensive. Hair cuts are bad enough!
coconut / 8279 posts
if it's someone different from the stylist that cuts & colors, yes. I tip each person that takes care of my hair.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Yes, but never more than $3 since she only washes it. There was one time when my stylist was over booked and super busy and she had the wash lady paint in my low-lights after she had done my highlights so I gave her a portion of my stylist's tip. I didn't tip any more than usual total, I just reallocated.
