It seems kind of high maintenance, but those carts are so germy! Someone gave me one at a shower, but I haven't been out of the house yet with LO to use it. It seems like kind of a hassle. Do you use one? Is it worth it?

I used it once but it was bulky and a pain to put on. I just wipe the cart down with a sanitizer wipe if the store provides them or a baby wipe these days.
Your LO is pretty young, do you just keep him in the car seat and put him in the cart?
pear / 1728 posts
I do. I have a Floppy Seat and love it. It has toy hooks and stuff, and occasionally liv will get sleepy and lay sideways in the cart and snooze. Its soft enough that it acts like a pillow. Those carts are so nasty, I cant bring myself to not use one. Though on the occasion I did (I had DHs car) I wiped the crap out of it (literally, did you know those handles test positive for feces?! Ick) with sanitizing wipes and purell

We still put LO in carseat in the baskets but once he's able to sit up better I do plan on using shopping cart cover. Our stores carts are pretty gross!

I wear DD when we shop so no. If/when she gets too heavy to wear then I may think about it but idk yet.

Nope. I think everyone in my town would think I'm a crazy snob if I did it. In fact, I've never seen one in real life use.

It's too bulky and a hassle to put in the cart properly with the seat belt. Much easier to just wipe the cart down.

I did at first, but not so much for the germs as much for the comfy factor. LO wasn't great at sitting up at first so it was nice because it was big and bulky and all the padding helped keep her upright... and if she did tip over a little she wouldn't get hurt. But now that she's more sturdy I don't use it.

@autumnlove he is 4 weeks...we haven't gone out anywhere with him yet. Probably while he is really little I'll keep him in the car seat, but as he gets older either wipe down the cart (that seems like the thing to do) or use the cover.

Yes I do use one. I have some issues with germ phodia lol so I never put DS or my daycare girl in the cart without it.

Yes, I used one. I especially liked them in the summer, if the carts were outside and the metal was hot. It avoided burns. Plus, I don't care what anyone says, people's hands are nasty and the nastier the handlebar was, the more my son was attracted to it!

I was just thinking about getting one of these, if for nothing else than to keep her stuff from falling through the slats. She is just getting to the point where we are going to have to switch her to the convertible carseat and the infant seat is getting really heavy. Now that she is sitting up I think it's time to try the car seats.

I was thinking of getting one too since they're on babysteals today...only my LO just whines in the shopping cart until I pick him up and carry him around the grocery store while still pushing a cart! Good to know they're a hassle.
Does anyone use them for highchairs in restaurants?
persimmon / 1396 posts
We have one and we use it all the time. LO is 4 months old and still isn't sitting very well, but with it we can prop her up and she loves it. We also use it when we go out to dinner. She loves sitting up in high chairs instead of being in her carrier.

I didn't know they existed until recently when a friend of mine whipped hers out to use on a restaurant high chair. I thought it was ingenius, because I'm kind of a germaphone, and hate touching shopping cart handles w/o wiping them down first. Definitely plan to get one!

I never thought they were useful until we were out shopping with my 11 month old nephew and my sister forgot her's and my nephew got his arm stuck in the slats twice.

I like to, but if I'm in a rush I don't bother.
@Sammyfab: we've used our in restaurants. It only works in places that have the typical wood or plastic chairs (no tray) but we like to where we can.

I have one I received as a gift but haven't used it yet. Lo isn't completely steady when she sits and I usually wear her when we are out. It seems kinda bulky though so I don't know if I'll end up using it...

Yes, I do. I once saw a segment on the news about how dirty shopping carts are. Most of them have fecal matter on it. So gross. I recently bought one off Zulily that's thinner and can fold into its own pouch. I forget the brand though. I have another one that's quilted that I've been using since my oldest was able to sit in a shopping cart. He loves to line up all of his free food at Costco on the part where the handle's covered.

Yes, but he wasn't able to sit up well enough to use it for any length of time until about 8 months.
The bacteria they culture off of those shopping carts is scary! I'm not a germophobe, but I have been a microbiologist. Think of the people wiping their noses and touching the handle, among other things- just gross.
Well worth the extra 30 seconds to set it up for me- plus the harness is much more sturdy than the cart seatbelt for my little wiggle worm.

I've used mine a couple of times but it is SUCH a pain. I prefer to wear her. But honestly? I went yesterday and I just plopped her in the bare cart. Kids are going to get germy. It happens. I feel like it builds a strong immune system.

I refuse to add one more thing to carry. I'll wipe the cart down. If she gets germs, so be it. She'll get them one way or the other.n

lo isn't here yet, but we've registered for one. i definitely planning on using it... not for the germ factor, but the convenience. i've used one with my nephew, and they're so nice. it creates a closed little basket, so he can't stick his arms or toys through the slots, and it keeps his pacifier, cup, toys, etc. in the cart. it's also much more comfy for him! pretty much everyone uses them here in suburbia, so i don't feel weird.

Maybe because I'm sick/tired/pregnant, but I totally read this as, "Do you use a shopping cart?" Then, I saw the first line about, "I know it's high maintenance," and I was so confused. Who doesn't use a shopping cart??? Then, I realized I'm an idiot.
I'm pretty sure that I won't use a cover because (a) when you have twins you have to put one somewhere else anyway so at least one will get germy and give it to the other anyway, (b) I think it might be just one more thing to keep up with, and (c) most of the stores I go to have wipes at the front to wipe off the cart.

I'll probably continue to wear LO in stores, but I think I'll use our cover at restaurants.
